The best place to start is forums, spring reference documentation (for 
the particular subsystem that you're interested in) and of course 
reading the source code/unit tests to gain an understanding of how 
particular subsystem is implemented. Then the next step would be to look 
at jira, find any interesting issues and try to supply patches, etc.
