What's not user friendly about going to the documentation, hitting
ctrl-f, and typing "hibernate"?  Section 12.2 (Hibernate) is probably of
interest to you.  Maybe "12.2.6. Programmatic transaction demarcation"
or "12.2.7. Declarative transaction demarcation" are misleading section
titles. :)

I would recommend you get hold of one of the books about Spring like
"Professional
Java Development with the Spring Framework" (

which is good and written by many of the authors of spring. I also really

It's quite hands on and has great examples.

[Springframework-developer] Batch processing with hibernate

(This is concerning an earlier entry by myself. I am not sure I chose
the subject well.)

The feature that I miss about the HibernateTransactionmanager is
Save-Points. I understand, that hibernate does not support partial or
even complete rollbacks. I think that in the specific case, where you
know all the entites associated wih the current session, you can
rollback by clearing the session and then refreshing all those entities.
In case of rollbacks to savepoints this means, that the db must return
the changes already flushed unto that savepoint. I am not sure if this a
requirement all dbs fullfill in all isolation levels but I suppose so.
Here is the implementation of setting a savepoint and rolling back to
it:

savePoint setSavepoint() {
	session.flush();//synchronize session state with db=20
	return session.connection.setSavepoint();
}

rollbackToSavepoint(Savepoint s) {
	session.clear();//discard all changes
	session.connection().rollback(s);
	for (...){//iteration over all entities
		session.refresh(entity);//reintialize session state from
db
	}
}

My application of this is a batch processing template with the folowing
callback:

Interface BatchProcessingCallback<T> {
	T selectEntity();
	void processEntity(T entity);
	void handleException(T entity);
}

The idea is to be able to select a single entity "for update" and
process it and then select the next and so on. If the processing of one
entity fails it can still be altered so that it won't be selected by the
processor again - making the processor fail over and over again while
other entites are not selected until manual intervention.

The batch processor processes entities until none is returned by the
callback.selectEntity(). The batch processor first calls selectEntity(),
then sets a savepoint (=3Dstarts an inner transaction). If an exception
occurs during processing or the transaction is set to rollback only, the
batchprocessor will rollback to that savepoint (rollback the inner
transaction) and call handleException(). At that point the client code
is responsible for marking the entity that was not processable as
corrupt, so it won't be picked up again.=20

I'm working on a project and we'd like to use Spring
2.0 for it.  While I have no problem using the
milestone builds for development our client will want
2.0 final released before we go to production.

Any idea when 2.0 will go final?  Please indicate how
accurate the date is as well.  I know of course the
date will be flexible for bugs, etc.  But I would like
to know if the suggested final date is a wild guess or
will be close, +/- a week or two.

s'ok - none of the shell scripts were executable and I think the ant script
caused a minor barf with the DOS EOL markers.  And oddly, I don't seem to
get the same issue with the website at home that I do on the laptop despite
same versions of browser..!?  Oh well..

Had a play on the train on the way home tonight.  Without access to any of
the guides or help texts, I managed to get a  controller and view together
easily enough showing some dynamic output.  Looking through some of the
code, I think it seems quite comprehensive for such an early release.
Pretty good effort all round.

Need to have a look at the scaffolding and DB stuff to see how that pans out
too, but I like the Spring integration and the general approach.

The groovy people have beatun us to it.  http://grails.codehaus.org/

I can't test it though as they seem to have gone to great lengths to ensure
it doesn't work in Linux.  Pretty good for a cross-platform solution :)

And the website CSS doesn't seem to work in Firefox on my machine at least;
have to disable the footer elements before it's readable.

But it *does* seem to have most or all of the features we were talking about
(and ships with Spring support).  Includes Jetty as the server.

 the wedge framework in your messages. More than I expected! This
 motivates me and, in the same time, I see it as a challenge!
 
 Trying to summarize your advices, for the moment, I come with this
 conclusions:
 
 1. I have given a close look to this ASM tool (http://asm.objectweb.org)
 and it looks quite nice to me. It will not be too hard to use it. I just
 need to get more familliar with bytecode generation  :-) . A custom
 class loader for the  generated mapping classes will help us on
 regenerating and reloading these classes as templates change. The beans
 behind the pages may be reloaded if the application was started in debug
 mode.
 
 2. The generation of byte code instead of java source code seams like a
 better idea. But what I see as a problem is how easy would be to debug
 such a code since it is a lot of code that we generate. I don't know if
 the price is not too much just to gain that 10 seconds spent on java
 source generation and compilation. (for an application of 250 pages,
 with proper optimizations, with selective regeneration, it would not
 take too long either).
 
 3. About providing a script that will start a wedge runtime. It is a
 very good idea but, again, I think it can wait until the framework will
 be stable enough for developer preview or even for development.
 
 4. On Steven Devijver example:
