In my case, there is no add or delete, only selection in well known
number of elements (used for instantiation of the array). I didn't try
with a list but the conversion is perhaps made internally. At least with
arrays, the two minor changes I proposed work as I use them. If lists
work also it will no care about the number of elements.

I had to handle with multiselect listboxes. The issue is the same with
checkboxes. The form returns many values for the same identifier. I just
take a look at the code. It is already the same as in the original
framework and don't handle this situation.

I had modified in my own i21 version the
com.interface21.web.util.WebUtils class the method
getParametersStartingWith(ServletRequest as follows:

For multiple form objects, you could use custom objects that you bind
parameters onto via BindUtils and put in the session as some custom
attribute. I consider it preferable to use a different strategy though:
Not a map, but a custom root object that contains the form objects as
bean properties, like a MyRootObject class with getMyFirstObject and
getMySecondFormObject methods. It's easy to bind to the contained
objects via nested properties, e.g. "myFirstFormObject.myProperty" and
"mySecondFormObject.myOtherProperty".

Regarding a list of objects, it's probably indeed the best way to parse
respective request parameters manually, in a custom onBindAndValidate
implementation. Especially if you want to add and remove elements, I
can't think of a different way. We could try to bind to an existing list
of objects, but it's not too obvious how to go about this (via an index?
what if it's a Set, Collection, or Map), so we don't support this yet.
If you have an idea how to achieve this, please let me know :-)

support binding data to a list? If not, do you have any suggestions on
how I may go about this? (I was initially thinking of passing back a
series of request parameters and manually adding these values to the
form object list but I have a feeling there is a more elegant way of
doing this.)

There might be something we could borrow from the Japple framework. 
Don't know if this the most elegant solution, but it works.

The Japple framework supports something like this for a Collection of 
objects by maintaining an internal "sequence" for each object and a 
hidden "queryString" which is used to provide hints to the binding 
mechanism.

[Springframework-developer] End of changes for sample Countries

Hi,

I have sent my latest changes for the Countries demo. To be cleaner, it
uses now XHTML. Also links on the Spring and SourceForge were added with
the message letting know that the sources are in the distribution.

I have no more change before the 0.9.1 except these described in my
latest message.

For multiple form objects, you could use custom objects that you bind
parameters onto via BindUtils and put in the session as some custom
attribute. I consider it preferable to use a different strategy though:
Not a map, but a custom root object that contains the form objects as
bean properties, like a MyRootObject class with getMyFirstObject and
getMySecondFormObject methods. It's easy to bind to the contained
objects via nested properties, e.g. "myFirstFormObject.myProperty" and
"mySecondFormObject.myOtherProperty".

Regarding a list of objects, it's probably indeed the best way to parse
respective request parameters manually, in a custom onBindAndValidate
implementation. Especially if you want to add and remove elements, I
can't think of a different way. We could try to bind to an existing list
of objects, but it's not too obvious how to go about this (via an index?
what if it's a Set, Collection, or Map), so we don't support this yet.
If you have an idea how to achieve this, please let me know :-)

Hi,

I have been lurking on this list for a while.  And I am currently 
experimenting with Spring 0.9.

In a recent email, Juergen asked for feedback from people using Spring.  
Here goes.

In my application, I wanted to have something like a Wizard when a user is 
filling a form.  I used the AbstractWizardFormController.

My form object contains a collection.  Using the wizard, I would like that 
one step allowed the user to add an arbitrary number of items to the 
collection. So each time a user adds an item, the same step is displayed so 
that he can continue adding. When he is finished he just presses the Next 
or Finish Button.

I have modified the petclinic application to see how I could do this with 
Spring.  I modified the AddOwnerForm so that when a Owner is Added his pets 
can also be added.  What I did is add a second step where a Pet can be 
created.  On this steps there are the standard Prev, Cancel and Finish 
Buttons.  But there is also a Add button to add the pet to the owner.  The 
add button points to the current wizard step.

I modified the onBindAndValidate() method to check for the presence of the 
_target1 attribute for page1. If it is there, it means that the user has 
pressed the Add button. I create a pet and add it to the owner. It kinda 
works, but is a bit klunky. I do not like the fact that I had to hard code 
"_target1" to make this work.

Is there a better way to do this?

English is not my first language, so my explanation may not be clear.  Just 
ask and I will explain further.

That seems to have done the trick - it looks fine now.
Should keep the techie audience happy :). I've noticed that my machine 
at home gets
about 70% of it's traffic (Code Red worm aside) from Mozilla users, so I 
think it's pretty important when your target audience is a bunch of Java 
  hackers. Not so important in the "real world" of course.

standard mode would, I suppose, be the solution. But for now, it's good,
the width is not the same but correct in both.

Your server seems to be more powerful than the one that is currently
hosting the
website.  If we can keep the "Countries" demo on your server for now, I
think we
will be better off.

For the rendering issues - I think that IE and Mozilla are most

[Springframework-developer] Test Coverage

It's Sunday night and I'm done with Spring for the weekend.

Not a bad weekend--added quite a few tests and made good progress on simpler
AOP option driven by metadata. (Haven't checked that in yet.)

Test coverage is now 71.7%. I'm pretty pleased with this, so I'll stop
breaking things for now :-)

Hi all,

Having tested on Mozilla, it's pretty good . . . when having worked with
CSS. I believed it was more damaged. =20

But effectively, the few CSS issues are very visible. The normal
font-height is a little small (I will set it in pixels instead
predefined word). The "news" box goes out of the windows as well as the
status box in main page. In blue theme, the navigation help text goes
over the content. The rest are minor things that can perfectly rest.

So, it will not be a hassle to adapt the styles for working on both IE
and Mozilla. I have not yet tested on Netscape7 and Opera (Netscape 4
being for fools only).

Maybe we should add a note that says it looks a bit weird in Mozilla, if
it's not possible to fix it easily. I know that making anything
non-trivial
work cross browsers can be a pain! Perhaps the note could recommend that
Mozilla users use the plain theme? We could auto-default based on the
user
agent (perhaps with one of Juergen's new interceptors), but I guess
that's

responsible for the look: the two CSS files.

We have here the common "browser forest" problem. We tend to have a
developers audience in which more people have several browsers and more
Linux platforms unlike the global population which uses IE(all versions)
for 95% (different sources including Gartner).

The actual Demo is very good on IE 6 and will decrease in rendering with
older versions. It's a very frustrating situation as it's not possible
to have different versions of IE on the same OS.

Adapting the css files will take a not negligible time (and is not the
primarily job nor interest of a developer), but I will try to better
rendering in the few most popular beside IE. I think at Netscape,
Mozilla and Opera.

If someone has better touch in graphics area and 'css' defining skills,
it will be welcome!

I use my server to quick demonstrations as it is very cool to have a
server with full control. When the 0.9.1 will be released, I think it's
better to implement the demo directly in the Spring server as I hope its
installation is more powerful. I give you my technical situation below.

My installation:

I have a "work & development purpose-PC" and a "server purpose PC", both
at home. So, I have complete control. They are in a tiny 100Mbits
network.

The server (P4-1.8Ghz-512Mo Ram-80Go Disk + 20Go database disk) is
always running and is connected to the web via a 512K DSL connection. I
use DynDNS for simulating a fixed IP and have bought my own domain name.
It has nor screen nor keyboard as I use it only remotely. Currently it
works under Windows-XP Pro. Thus, this implies I have only 128K outgoing
bandwidth and it rests a home installation nevertheless with a 15min.
UPS.=20
The database is only on the server.

The work-PC (P4-2.4Ghz-1Go Ram) uses the web connection from it. It is
running only when I need it. This implies that when, from time to time,
I download a file, the bandwidth could be heavily used for many minutes.

The Countries Demo is now finished, as well in the repository as on my

As explained on the Demo, the CountriesDao has now both implementations:
in memory and database.

Three configurations are proposed:

1) Simple in memory
2) Memory + database to copy from memory to the database
3) Simple database if the copy possibility provided in configuration 2
was used

A custom interceptor is used (letting easily test the configuration by
the views) to provide a copy function if the configuration 2 is
detected.

Localized views property files are used. With Excel and Pdf views,
refreshable paged list, localization, localized themes and composed
views, I believe the aim of demonstrating the advanced web features of
the framework is reached.

Juergen will certainly minor adaptation to make. I have only given the
complete database configuration for JBoss/MySql.
If anyone could add something for Tomcat, HSql, etc., it would be
complete.

[Springframework-developer] Test Coverage

Hi Guys,

With the additional test cases I've added, some dead code I've removed, and
moving immature/untested code to the new sandbox, our test coverage is now
70.4% and rising.

AFAIK this compares pretty well with most open source and commercial
projects. When we go 1.0 we should encourage Clover to display our coverage
results on their web site.

However, I don't think even 70% is high enough... It would be great if we
can hit at least 75% for 1.0!

I've created a directory called "sandbox" parallel to /src and /test. (I
think I mentioned the idea of calling this "play" yesterday.)

This contains stuff from the src tree that doesn't deserve to be scrapped,
but which we don't want to release right now.

I'm keen that what we _do_ release is focused, documented, tested and likely
to be used in the near future. If it's likely to be used only at some
unspecified point, we'd be better to wait for user feedback rather than
guess now.

Examples appropriate for the sandbox include the Visitor classes from
com.interface21.core.

This is also a good area for getting code up to release standard if it's not
certain to go into src right away: e.g. I might put the JMS stuff back here
at some point.

I think sandbox test cases should probably go in the same directory for now.
I don't see much value in automated testing of this.
