Yes, this sounds interesting. Because it's so easy to 
implement views with Spring we probably need to think about 
how to organize things. Or maybe just in the main source tree 
and wear the dependencies?

[Springframework-developer] Petclinic ANT build

Juergen,

I noticed you added an ant.bat file to petclinic that is similar to that 
used for the countries demo app. In the petclinic build.xml, another 
build.xml (in the db dir) is invoked to initialize the database for 
testing. When your ant.bat file is used, the test part of the build 
fails because it can't load the class for the JDBC driver. When I use 
the standard ant.bat supplied with Ant, it works fine, but this is 
predicated on placing copies of the jdbc connector jars in Ant's lib 
dir. Obviously, it is better not to force the developer to do this 
because of possible versioning problems. I don't understand why the 
nested build.xml can't see the same classpath as the main one. Any ideas ???

Hi all,

One small question. I'm currently testing out some stuff and am right
now trying to sign up users. The objects I work with are directly
provided by the backend guys and therefore don't provide for instance
something like a password checking field (repassword or something).
However, I want to provide the user with two fields, and validate if the
two password fields are the same... Since I haven't found anything yet
that I can't do using Spring, I suspect there's some solution for this
as well ;-)?

Besides that I'm working on a TilesViewResolver and accompanying

I would agree with Ken here - we must avoid any dependencies between the JDBC
framework and the Web framework.  There must be a better way of solving this.
Why can't you just pass in the locale as a regular parameter in a where clause
for a SQLQuery?

Wouldn't simply subclassing MappingSqlQueryWithParameters be enough to 
get what you need ??? If it isn't, I guess I don't understand why :-( .

Surely the Spring JDBC framework doesn't need to know anything about 
Locales and I would find the doubling of the number of convenience 
methods for all those classes to be troubling.

you could try to use XmlViewResolver strategy with your views defined in
/WEB-INF/views.xml (default) to allow for (.)s in your view names unless you
need internationalization support:

I guess you're right somehow, but it would be really convenient ;-). The
properties like .class and .url dynamic, iow are there more, or just
those two, otherwise it would be possible to include list of impossible
additions iso just not permitting dots...

Well, anyway, am replacing the dots wish something else now and it works
of course...

All,

I've added a new HierarchicalBeanFactory interface. This is now implemented
by AbstractBeanFactory and extended by ApplicationContext. The functionality
was already there; I wanted it to be accessible without depending on an
abstract implementation class.

I've added several new methods to BeanFactoryUtils. These make it possible
to find all bean names *including beans defined in ancestors*. The
getBeanDefinitionNames() method etc on ListableBeanFactory apply only to the
current factory, and don't include ancestors. I didn't want to change this
behaviour, as it's a reasonable default, but I did need the option of
finding beans by type defined in a parent factory to support my new AOP
functionality. I didn't want to get into a HierarchicalListableBeanFactory,
which sounded a bit too fancy (plus might conflict with the clarity of the
existing methods) so I went for adding static helper methods.

Ok, here we go...

Like you said, at first glance, it does not look like the i21:bind tag
needs expressionalization (hmmm, nice huh ;-). However, in the petclinic
demo app I'm seeing a lot of input.jsps in the jsp/fields directory.
These are things I'm hoping to solve using for instance EL-based tags...
Attached you'll find a reworked version of the ownerForm. It does not
use the JSPs from the fields directory anymore, but uses only one
input.jsp that uses the bindstatus object to create the input field.

Ok, it's still all rough and reworking the tags is a little bit more
work than the 15 minutes I spent on it now, but maybe you're getting the
idea.

Consequences for adding / reworking the tags:

1. dependency on jakarta-jstl-1.0.3 (jakarta.apache.org/taglib -->
standard).
2. dependency on jstl-1.0.3 (java.sun.com)
3. In case you want to have both version in there, an extending class
for each tag
4. For each tag, a BeanInfo class
5. I wasn't able to use the EvalHelper from jakarta, so I copied it
(hmmm... not so nice, is it ;-)

Probably I don't have time this week or something to refactor them to be
all EL-based... Just let me know if you'd like it.

Well, that's it for now, still discovering really cool features and
already running out (brain)memory to think up everything I could do with
Spring ;-)

I'm back from vacation and ready to get going on finishing up version 1 
of petclinic. I apologize again for the rough and incomplete nature of 
the documentation so far supplied.

In addition to finishing and polishing the docs, I also have in mind a 
few other changes:

1. In my ClinicJdbcDAO, I have a number of inner classes that provide 
the database queries,updates, and inserts. ClinicJdbcDAO creates 
instances of these classes, storing references to them as 
RdbmsOperations so that subclasses may substitute their own specialized 
versions (as bean properties), including StoredProcedures. A subclass 
must also override the related ClinicDAO API method. I didn't add the 
setters/getters needed for subclasses to use them. Also, the 
afterPropertiesSet method will need to be changed to only add the 
default versions for these properties that haven't been set. I will also 
move the inner classes outside to package level. This extra level of 
complexity isn't really needed for the demo but I think it shows some of 
Spring's strengths. I also wanted to show the point that the these 
objects are threadsafe, reusable items that can 
be created upfront with the SQL statements compiled only once.

2. Implement Juergen's suggestion to eliminate the separation of the 
business and persistence layers.
<juergen>Regarding the implementation: I've noticed that the Clinic 
interface duplicates ClinicDAO's methods to a large extent, and that 
ClinicImpl adds cross-referencing and caching to the entities (data 
access aspects). This isn't really proper separation between data access 
code and business logic, but of course the borders are often somewhat 
blurring. In our case, it's probably more appropriate to merge the two, 
i.e. offer just a Clinic interface, with the common logic in an 
AbstractClinic base class, and a ClinicJdbcImpl default implementation. 
IMO, the app simply isn't complex enough for separated business and data 
access layers.</juergen>

3. Miscellaneous minor refactoring and cleanup.

Should I focus my work toward a 0.9.1 release (i.e. simply completing 
the documentation) or the 1.0RC ?

If the consensus is 0.9.1, when is the target for this release ?

Do you think my item #1 above is worth doing for this demo app or would

The SourceForge archives are somewhat peculiar, I've experienced that =
"unarchived" message myself repeatedly. Never mind, they'll reappear...

Regarding JSTL EL usage: As BindErrorsTag and BindTag just take a bean =
name resp. a bean path (consisting of bean name + a property path) as =
attributes, I don't see much place for EL there - maybe for iteration =
over a predefined set of bound fields? The main candidate for EL support =
is probably MessageTag: It supports message lookup via code, or simply =
writing a message text (possibly automatically HTML-escaped) - both =
could be computed by EL expressions.

Do you have any concrete EL usage scenarios with Spring tags? In any =
case, if you'd like to look into potential EL support for MessageTag or =
others, please go ahead!

We really do our best to answer questions. And listen. I 
think it's vital to listen to users. I don't believe it's

Furthermore, I was browsing the mail archive and saw that sometimes your
kind of scared about putting dependencies in your project. I don't know
if it would help you somehow, but we've been using the repository
approach from Maven (not the complete Maven tool, because I don't think
it fits our needs at all). There's a small Ant task for it, called
Greebo (search on Google for 'ant greebo' and you'll find it). Using
this you can leave the third party stuff on a public reposittory (like
the one ibiblio offers, www.ibiblio.org/maven) and they only get
downloaded when needed...

In a final touch, I consider this current lack (arrays, lists and maps
request mappings) as very important. It is unconceivable a Web Framework
to not handle this. Otherwise it cut information sent by standard HTML
form elements. We should take time to provide a good general solution
and not quickly provide somewhat before a release. On the other hand,
it's not an each day need.

In others words, 0.9.1 can be released without this, but not 1.0.
So, we will have some time to cleanly implement this. For my needs, I
can continue to hack the framework until a more general solution is
found.

Whatever the solution we will provide, I don't see how it could work
without my change requests. As they are very basic and certainly we
cannot go away from them. It's a starting point.

In my case, there is no add or delete, only selection in well known
number of elements (used for instantiation of the array). I didn't try
with a list but the conversion is perhaps made internally. At least with
arrays, the two minor changes I proposed work as I use them. If lists
work also it will no care about the number of elements.

I'm not sure that my answer is related to this, maybe.
I had to handle with multiselect listboxes. The issue is the same with
checkboxes. The form returns many values for the same identifier. I just
take a look at the code. It is already the same as in the original
framework and don't handle this situation.

For multiple form objects, you could use custom objects that you bind
parameters onto via BindUtils and put in the session as some custom
attribute. I consider it preferable to use a different strategy though:
Not a map, but a custom root object that contains the form objects as
bean properties, like a MyRootObject class with getMyFirstObject and
getMySecondFormObject methods. It's easy to bind to the contained
objects via nested properties, e.g. "myFirstFormObject.myProperty" and
"mySecondFormObject.myOtherProperty".

Regarding a list of objects, it's probably indeed the best way to parse
respective request parameters manually, in a custom onBindAndValidate
implementation. Especially if you want to add and remove elements, I
can't think of a different way. We could try to bind to an existing list
of objects, but it's not too obvious how to go about this (via an index?
what if it's a Set, Collection, or Map), so we don't support this yet.
If you have an idea how to achieve this, please let me know :-)
