I've got it to work, but only after modifying the build.xml in CVS to
include *.ftl files. Here's my template:

Guys, Going to check initial JMX code into sandbox tomorrow. This allows you to automatically expose a bean as a JMX managed resource without the need to implement any JMX interfaces on the bean. Should have Commons Attributes support done by tomorrow so that it is possible to be selective about which methods and properties are exposed. Also I have a JMX Proxy created which I will wrap up in a FactoryBean so you can have JMX resources set as dependencies on your beans. Currently the proxy is quite primitive but I plan to add more sophistication into that. By the end of the week I want to support the basics of notifications as well as start looking at exposing Spring configuration via JMX. Rob |

The remaining tasks that I see are: - We need to adapt the source code formatting of the JMS support: I still see nasty empty lines after each code line on Windows: maybe Unix/Windows line feed differences? - I'd like to review the source code of the final version of JMS support. Just about polishing and javadoc, as always before a release :-) - Thomas is already working on using a single API approach for JDBC-generated keys, including moving the classes to a different package. - I'd like to move BindStatus and the new BindStatusHelper class from servlet.tags to servlet.support. JSPs using the BindTag should still work= , provided that they get freshly compiled. Any objections to this? - I'd like to refine resource loading in VelocityFormView and FreeMarkerFormView: This is not entirely clean when combined with custom resource paths yet, from a superficial glance. - We need to add Seth's NestedPathTag and include his BindTag refinements. I'll do this myself during the course of the week. If the problem is related to the use of java.beans.Introspector that is = caching BeanInfo's, then, as I said in a previous email, you need to = have a javax.servlet.ServletContextListener, that has a call to = java.beans.Instrospector.flushCaches() in the destroy method. Spring = 1.1 will offer a built-in listener for such purpose = (org.springframework.web.util.IntrospectorCleanupListener), but for = previous version of Spring, you can create your own, it's a fairly = simple class anyway. When a webapp is hot-redeployed, a new ClassLoader is created to = load the webapp, and the old one is thrown away, expected to be garbage = collected. For the collection to happen, the server must clear any = strong reference to the ClassLoader or its classes, and also the webapp = must make sure that any code in parent ClassLoaders (or siblings) clear = any reference it might have to any of the webapp's class. Our test coverage is about 70% right now (we used to be close to 80% = just before the 1.0 release) and although some classes are pretty hard = to test (probably only using integration tests) there is still room for = improvement IMHO. I just spent an hour on a couple of tests and = increased coverage with about 0.9%. This was discussed a few months ago: http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.java.springframework.devel/4546 The consensus at that time was it's not a Spring problem, but some of the libraries used by Spring (eg, Hibernate). Juergen, and others, did a lot of profiling. Apparently, the problems were either fixed or identified as not a native Spring problem. <rant> I think it's sad that due to numerous reasons, we can't keep Tomcat (or any webapp container) up and running over a day's development. Imagine if PHP users had to restart Apache after they change their .php files > 20 times. Last I checked, there is an 'E' in J2EE that stands for Enterprise. One requirement for Enterprise would be to run 24/7. That means, to me, to stay running even after redeployments of new versions of webapps. I am so surprised that we as Java developers are so silent on this issue. We should demand much more loudly for more robust application servers and deployments. Have a look at the org.springframework.remoting.jaxrpc package, and at =
the JPetStore sample app. The latter illustrates both exposure of a Web =
Service via Axis and accessing a Web Service in a demo client (via =
JaxRpcPortProxyFactoryBean).

We have been using Spring for some projects for past 3 months
successfully. We are very impressed with the ease of use and
flexibility that Spring provides. Our current requirement is to have a
web service implemented through Spring. We feel that this would be a
better solution than using something like Axis directly. This way, we
can actually choose a different implementation without touching
majority of the code.

Is web services one of the near future additions in Spring's road map?
If not, we would like to help design a set of web service interfaces
and at least one support package - possibly using Axis. I felt it is
better to get some input from the contributors before we actually
start work in this direction.
