[Springframework-developer] JmsTemplate102

Hi!

Just playing around with the JMS-support (it's looking great!) and was puzzled
that JmsTemplate102 is not divided in 2 classes, one for Queues and one for
Topics. Are there any reasons why this is not done? Looks like a better OO
solution than having a bunch of if/else's...

[Springframework-developer] More JMX

Everyone,

I finished off the inital stage of work on JMX attribute change
notifications. Added a bunch of tests to verify that these work. May
need to do some refactoring to enable a few more methods to have better
coverage, but for now the code is working and can be tested out.

I don't have much time this week, but I imagine I should have enough
time to get the basics of MBean registration done, so that Spring can
actually register the user's own MBeans. Plus I want to get the basics
of an adapter host in place to host adaptors of different
implementations such as SUN RI and MX4J.

Next week I'll most likely start on either notifications through AOP or
JSR 160 integration. Also want to add JmxTemplate which may be useful
and finish of the JDK proxy. I'll certainly add proxying to the JSR160
support so that remote JMX resources can be accessed using a proxy
instead of the JSR 160 classes.

I also want to look at making BeanFactories available via JMX and it
would be cool if I could add a persistence scheme to the MBeans so that
when an attribute changes in JMX it can be written back to the BeanFactory.

I committed my remoting code to the Spring RCP sandbox last Friday but =
was holding off on letting anyone know as I haven't ironed out the proxy =
generation just yet (not sure whether to use the Spring or JDK proxy =
code), check it out.=20

Internally I use my own custom invocation (called .Request) and =
InvocationResult (.Reply) classes but essentially the invocation class =
is almost identical to the Spring RemoteInvocation (in my class the =
parameter types are encoded in the method name rather than being =
transferred as an array). I also have a set of drop in replacements for =
HessianProxyFactoryBean and HessianServiceExporter with full support =
BASIC authentication but on top of that my system also has pluggable =
protocols and transports (though I've only implemented HTTP and =
serialization).

The most interesting thing IMO from my code is probably the retry stuff. =
The biggest issue with any kind of retry system is to make sure we =
*never* invoke a remote method twice unless we know for sure it is safe =
to do so. I.e. We certainly wouldn't want any CRUD operation to be =
executed twice but perhaps we wouldn't mind if a query operation was. To =
allow the remoting system to make a decision about retry I have the =
following:

And to help the RetryDecisionManager every SimpleRemotingException has a =
property "recoverable". Throughout my code wherever a =
SimpleRemotingException is thrown I've tried to categorize the =
recoverability of the exception into 3 states:

1) Recoverable=3DYES is any exception where the system is sure that the =
remote method was *not* invoked.
2) Recoverable=3DNO is any exception where the system is sure that the =
remote method *was* invoked. =20
3) Recoverable=3DMAYBE is any exception where the system has no idea =
whether the remote method was or was not invoked. This is the most =
common case.

So a simplistic RetryDecisionManager might just be something like this:

methods could be added.


In addition to this there's also some progress tracking support code and =

useful. I think it would be a big value add if Spring provided a really =
nice remoting implementation with good retry, progress and security =
support.=20

serialization myself for quite a while, but not added it to Spring yet, =
focussing on the RMI invoker and Hessian instead. Good to see that =
there's interest in such an approach, and good to see that you're =
already prototyping a solution!

Today I've played a bit with a simple implementation myself: an exporter =
and a proxy factory that simply serialize RemoteInvocation and =
RemoteInvocationResult objects over HTTP. Each is just about 50 lines of =
code currently. The exporter is a Spring web controller, just like =
HessianServiceExporter, participating in Spring's web framework. The =
proxy factory uses Commons HttpClient to access a specified service URL. =
Server and client side just interact with RemoteInvocation and =
RemoteInvocationResult objects.

I've reused some of the code from Spring's RMI invoker mechanism here, =
which I already designed as generic remoting support. As with the RMI =
invoker, it's straightforward to add further context information to =
RemoteInvocation, by using an appropriate subclass: for example, user =
credentials. It's even the very same mechanism for both, just going =
through the RMI subsystem in the one case and serializing over HTTP in =
the other case!

My current prototype is deliberately as simple as possible: It is =

I'm surprised by how simple this was: It didn't take much more than two =
hours of initial coding and testing. Of course, it lacks support for =
retries and for progress bars at this point of time. Nevertheless, we =
certainly have similar goals here: So I suggest to merge our efforts. If =
we do retries in standard Spring, I'd like to add this in a generic =
fashion for all of Spring's supported remoting protocols. Progress bars =
is harder, as we need hooks into the streaming code here.

I'm inclined to add my basic version of this to Spring 1.1 final, as it =
is so straightforward and so analogous to the existing Hessian / Burlap =
/ RMI invoker support. Retry strategies etc are definitely a 1.2 =
feature, though. My biggest issue is the naming, actually: =
"SimpleHttpServiceExporter" and "SimpleHttpClientInterceptor" don't =
sound too convincing. Any better naming suggestions? We should get =
serialization into the name, or use some acronym...

I'd be happy to submit my own remoting implementation. It's lacking a =
bit of polish but I'm currently in the process of making it almost =
"drop-in" compatible with the Spring Hessian support code.

It's works in a similar way to Hessian (I've borrowed quite a few ideas =
and a bit of code - though it doesn't reimplement any of the Hessian =
API) but it's based on Java serialization rather than the custom =
serialization code in Hessian. What this means is that the only =
requirement on invocations is that all arguments are Serializable. This =
also gets rid of any problems with Hibernate collections assuming you =
*do* include the Hibernate jar on the client side ;-)

A nice little extra is the ability to retry invocations that fail =
because of IOException etc. The system allows you to register a =
RetryDecisionManager which can interrogate the invocation and the =
exception that has caused the failure. The remoting system also flags =
all exceptions to indicate whether they are recoverable or not and when =
it's not sure it also uses a "Maybe" recoverable status.

It certainly wouldn't be hard to add some hooks for a progress bar. Andy =
what did you have in mind?

Anyway If you're interested please let me know and I'll clean up the =
code a bit and send it through to the list.

This is how I solved this. I used Quartz abstraction from within Spring and
scheduled the delete process as a Job. So now the the trigger runs every 50
secs and deletes the items in a FIFO queue from commons
(org.apache.commons.collections.buffer.UnboundedFifoBuffer). Now the
successview is returned immediately when the user presses the 'delete'
button. When the trigger runs the item is deleted from the queue. Not sure
what race conditions I may encounter yet, but appears good so far.

once I removed the deleted item from the list in the session and logically
delete it in the DB and send it for asynchrnous deletion, then I just want
the user to get back the list with it deleted (even if it isn't deleted
yet, but appears that way to the user since the perception to them is that
they cannot see it). I have done this in the past using the two techniques
mentioned so far (JMS, thread) before using Spring, just wanted to know if
Spring had a way to handle this natively.

waits for the return. So when you want to have a scenario with automatic
update of a page, you will have to use some constant polling technique
(by using the refresh meta tag for instance). You should then refresh to
some status page that will query some session parameter or database
parameter. The thread or jms should then upon completion set this
parameter in the session or the database, so that on the next poll of
the browser the page will be shown as completed.

what I am noticing is that before using the batch all my statements =
woere
done in one transaction, now using the executor, it appears that every
statement is now done in its own transaction. Why would this be the =

I made a mistake, the transactions I mentioned was for something else. He=
re is what is really happening. I put a log statement just when entering =
and exiting the call to deleteFamily and here is where the application ha=
ngs (The browser is also hanging waiting for a response)

Thanks Dmitriy! Actually I had done that and it fixed the problem. Now,
what I am noticing is that before using the batch all my statements woere=

done in one transaction, now using the executor, it appears that every
statement is now done in its own transaction. Why would this be the case?=
