Your points are well taken and my example of hibernate is a bit =
different situation than spring is in. Caching is an integral part of =
hibernate that they have thankfully made pluggable. =20
Spring IoC is more like a service provider with really good glue. I can =
think of plenty of examples where I would like access to the "native" =
API of a particular service and not have to be hindered by an overly =
simplistic abstract API.
Obviously I was more interested in getting feedback on OSCache than =
thinking about the issue ;)

That's a good suggestion. I was thinking of something along the lines of the Velocity support in Spring with some helper classes for general use and then view support in the MVC stuff. I'll see what I can do on this front, although Jasper is already pretty easy to use - everything is generally accessible using statics on one of the facade classes. My thoughts also. I have basic support working on my machine including on the fly compilation of design files and loading of reports from .jasper files. Currently I am using a really basic web application to test this out but it is working okay. I have only got as far as you support PDF files, but I should have some more time tomorrow so I'll add HTML and CVS as well. Having three cache interfaces and corresponding EH-CACHE implementations

I fully agree with Juergen - the subtle variations between caches exist
and it's of questionable value trying to come up with a
one-size-fits-all interface. In Acegi Security we expose a simple
project-specific interface, such as:
public interface UserCache {
public UserDetails getUserFromCache(String username);
public void putUserInCache(UserDetails user);
public void removeUserFromCache(String username);
}
If people really need cache pluggability within their own projects, they
can expose project-specific interfaces to the cache (as above) and then
write a simple implementation that just does casting and passes through
to the cache engine.
In relation to Spring loading and configuring the cache engines, there
is a lot of value in this. We've had two issues emerge with EH-CACHE
loading after web context refreshes, and then null pointer exceptions
with the fix. Thus it would be better if we could interface with a cache
engine Spring worries about managing, and users already know how to
configure. Due to widespread use, such bugs are likely to be ironed out
quickly, and projects such as Acegi Security can provide more
implementations of their own project-specific cache interfaces, given
Spring takes care of the engine-specific mechanics.

This is interesting. We are currently developing a rich (internet) client using spring-rich and will have need to not only display Jasper reports but also to link the reports to our app for drill down purposes (in other words, placing hyperlinks in the report that our app can intercept and respond to). Is there any possibility of creating a layer that would be common to both web and rich client UIs? Glad to hear people are still thinking about OSCache. I wonder about the comment made about the "weak configuration". I am actively contributing to it right now and would love any input on it. As far as a pluggable cache system goes, I think hibernate's model works fairly well and I would like to see something like that in Spring. One selfish question, I researched all the other open source caches out there; however, I found them all to be immature except OSCache. Is there a reason you are considering EHCache instead? I like having this option. One thought this triggered in my head is the=20
possibility of having application oriented XML config files. In other word=

config files that are oriented around your app so that they become easier t=

work with for the masses. ActiveMQ and Mule are two systems that allow you=

to either configure via Spring or configure via a native XML that is=20
typically easier to work with. ActiveMQ actually uses XSL internally to=20
translate from the ActiveMQ oriented XML config to a Spring config. So,=20
having said all this, would it make sense to add an xsl (or transform-with)=
=20
attribute to the import tag? I could then do something like this:

<import resource=3D"app-config.xml" transform-with=3D"app-to-spring.xsl=

...
</beans>

I know I've had mention before people wanting to see logically how the =

are related - when they're looking at the files (rather than going to
bootstrap configuration, generally separate.) Kind of a "less magic" =
thing.
I think the import tag, like the recent abstract attribute for abstract =

definitions, can help make things more explicit.

Just curious: if I was to do like above, and still bootstrap a single
application context with "business-layer.xml" and "data-access.xml" as

Let's say I had a "utilities-context.xml" with utility beans used by my
other contexts (like PropertyPlaceholderConfigurer), used by business =
and
dao. If I imported that guy into those files, but in the end everything
resulted in a flat "big" context -- what would happen?
