Hello, It seems that TSS has already started pushing their Symposium for '05. http://www.theserverside.com/symposium/ It's a bit early to decide or plan for, but their early bird registration seems to end today. I was curious if anyone is hoping/planning to go? Might make it an easier sell to The Boss. Thanks, Seth |

Great! I think this is the entry I put in there a while ago and never got around to implementing. Anybody using this should really treat all view names opaquely in the controller, if possible, so the controller has no idea that there's a redirect even happening.. So the controller should define properties (similar to successView) for all view names... jürgen höller [werk3AT] wrote: >I've just added a further minor new feature, following a JIRA suggestion: > >UrlBasedViewResolver supports a special "redirect:" prefix now, generating RedirectViews for the given rest of the view name. Hi Alessandro, Spring's view names are supposed to be global for the scope of a = DispatcherServlet. Hence, all controllers in the same dispatcher will = share a single view namespace. There is no support for having "local" = view names that just apply to a specific controller, with different = controllers returning the same view names but referring to different = views. Essentially, Spring does not use the same view name semantics as WebWork = here, where view names are usually local: for example, "success" or = "form". View names in Spring are rather meant to refer to shared = physical resources, thus being global (for the scope of a dispatcher): = for example, "orderForm" or "orderList". If you still want to use local-style view names, you could collect some = of your controllers into a separate DispatcherServlet context, having = their own view namespace there. Or you could use controller-specific = prefixes for view names. Juergen -----Original Message----- From: spr...@li... I've just added a further minor new feature, following a JIRA = suggestion: UrlBasedViewResolver supports a special "redirect:" prefix now, = generating RedirectViews for the given rest of the view name. All = regular view names will be resolved as usual, i.e. as = InternalResourceViews or VelocityViews (typically prepending the = specified prefix and appending the specified suffix). The benefit is that redirects can be specified through a special view = name now, rather than through programmatically creating a ModelAndView = with a RedirectView instance. In particular, this means that you can = specify "redirect:myList.do" as "successView" for a = SimpleFormController, just overriding "doSubmitAction" and not worrying = about the success ModelAndView. Nick, If we JMXify the BeanFactory or ApplicationContext then we can expose a wide variety of functionality via a standard JMX MBean. For instance we could use JMX as an interface for hot swapping bean implementations at runtime or as a mechanism for introducing new bean definitions at runtime similar to the JMX MLet service. By introducing JMX we can introduce all sorts of lifecycle functionality and make it accessible using the wide variety of JMX adapters such as HTTP and SNMP - plus we can publish notifications to a wide variety of listeners using JMX notifications allowing for management of internal Spring functionality like caches and configuration files. Also since we now have JSR160 support, we can use JMX to provide a mechanism for remote management of Spring. Hello all, As of my snapshot of spring-rich, the command framework is defined mostly via abstract and concrete classes (AbstractCommand, ActionCommand, etc). This is all completely functional, but every time I use the command framework it just... feels wrong... Of course, there are some interfaces (such as Guarded), but I just can't shake the feeling that there ought to be a Command or ActionCommand interface. Sometimes I need to reference a command in my code and I can never boil my reference down to an interface... the reference almost always becomes "AbstractCommand" - again, this feels wrong. I know that this is really unnecessary from a functional standpoint, but what is the consensus on making command/action command interface(s)? For me, I don't have any use cases that would benefit from it - it would benefit me only in that I would breath easier about the whole thing. But still, something in me screams, "give me interfaces or give me death!" Well, not death literally of course. :-) - Andy |

The Spring Rich Client project is starting to get some press! As a general progress update to you guys we're still not at a release candidate yet, but there is quite a lot there people seem to find worth talking about. :-) http://www.clientjava.com/blog/2004/11/08/1099919881000.html http://www.clientjava.com/blog/2004/11/05/1099671067000.html The first article just might make javadesktop.org as a featured article (a bit different crowd over there ;-)), showcasing Oliver Hutchison's form builder work integrated with our data binding and validation framework. I guess I expressed myself a bit too strong ;-). I rewrote the test in = about the same way as you did... Hi Colin,
I checkout the latest code from the head and tried the approaches you have
outlined below. Using ClassPathXmlApplicationContext does not work as it
does not create/initialize the beanFactory until you call refresh, so there
is no way to supply my application object (communicator).
GenericApplicationContext approach works and is a clean workable solution.
Thanks,
--Venkat.

Just for the record though, I was being incredibly dense below, as of
course there is not even a need of the factory bean. The Communicator
itself can just be registered as the singleton.
In my own defence, I started off with another approach that did need the
factory bean. That approach was a bit more complex, but would allow a
refresh too. It's to create a MutablePropertyValue wrapping the factory
bean, and use it with a new RootBeanDefinition which is just registered
manually. Then the xml context def can also be read in. I would stick to
the simpler approach until you actually need more than one refresh though...

I hope you don't mind the change, Alef! I guess the current test = implementation (which seems to be the same that you just tried to = achieve) still tests AbstractPdfView well enough - i.e. we didn't really = remove the test, we just rewrote it. =20 Indeed, iText doesn't allow to read PDF content... That's why I created = a document for comparisons in the rewritten unit test, instead of = reading in the AbstractPdfView-generated content. I see what your = original intention was; that goal was perfectly fine, of course, aside = from introducing a pdfbox dependency. =20 In general, I don't believe that dependencies specifically introduced = for unit tests are a bad thing. However, 1.7 MB extra binaries is a bit = large, in particular if just used for a single unit test that can be = rewritten to test differently... =20 I'm worried that some people might use the size of = spring-framework-x.x.x-with-dependencies.zip as an indicator for the = "bloatedness" of the framework. I guess it should be a goal to keep it = free from dependencies that are not strictly necessary, in particular as = we're about to add further feature-driven dependencies for Spring 1.2. =20 Juergen =20 ________________________________ Von: spr...@li... im Auftrag = von Alef Arendsen Gesendet: So 07.11.2004 19:48 An: spr...@li...; = spr...@li... Yes, pdfbox is only used in the tests. = From the iText doco I concluded that it's not possible to read PDFs with = iText, so I used pdfbox. To be honest, I'm not a big fan of removing a = unit test because the download size increases (not just because I wrote = the test ;-). =20 I've just revised the test to check for length and appropriate document = instances and stuff... =20 -- err, I see you already updated it ;-). Subject: Re: [Springframework-developer] Re: pdfbox and itext Actually, I consider removing the pdfbox jar completely... It's 1.7 MB = (!!) and just used in a unit test. As we need to ship everything that's = needed to build and run the test suite, we'd need to include it in the = distribution if we kept that unit test. I just noticed that we have already shipped that jar in the 1.1.1 = download. Still, I vote for removing it: 1.7 MB is too large just for a = unit test - in particular if the unit test is testing iText itself = rather than our AbstractPdfView. I don't mean to intend that the particular unit test isn't valuable - = just that a 1.7 MB increase in download size is a bad tradeoff for such = a unit test. Nick, It isn't something that you will use all the time, but flexible log naming is quite useful when using multiple beans of the same time. This isn't a replacement for the private LOG field, it is a complement. The other benefit is that it allows you to mock your logger for testing. I personally dont often test logging - usually because I am using the private static final Log LOG = LogFactory.getLog(MyClass.class); and its a PITA. But occassionally, you do want to test that you are logging something (ie when the logging is important - typically WARN level logging). However, that said, I think that the PITA factor for a setter based dependancy for something as common as logging might outweigh its benefits.. (By PITA factor, I am referring to NPE's when you forget to call the setter in your tests) -Nick On Sun, 07 Nov 2004 19:59:12 GMT, Rob Harrop <ro...@ca...> wrote: > My thinking is that it allows for log names to be changed easily - something > that is quite handy in apps where you have many instances of the same > service components lying around. > > Rob > > > > James Cook writes: > > > I guess I don't have to use it, but I also think it's a bit overkill.
