Whilst these projects don't push HSQLDB's features, it was only a minor couple of changes to get the later version running successfully. Also, in Spring Rich there's an InMemoryClinic that extends HsqlJdbcClinic, so it runs fine with 1.7.2 RC 6D at least. I agree users will want to move to the later versions (as the above projects needed to), so it's probably desirable to perform the upgrade. Best regards Ben |

I believe the issue I mentioned below is due to the fact that JBoss 3.2.5 and earlier was using HSQLDB 1.7.1 (from late 2002), while JBoss 3.2.6 uses HSQLDB 1.7.2 (one of the point releases, dated some time in august. The last point release, from Oct is actually 1.7.2.7). I was going to try slipping in 1.7.2 in our own codebase, which you would think would not be an issue going from 1.7.1 to 1.7.2, but in fact there are some major changes internally, and the new version barfs on the stored db as well as the setup script for petclinic for example, with an error on some of the formerly legal SQL. http://hsqldb.sourceforge.net/web/changelog.html I think this kind of incompatibility is an major bad move for the developer of HSQLDB; this should have been called 1.8 then... So I am wondering if we should try to make a switch, and what the implications really are. If we stay with 1.7.1, we can't run in the newer JBoss, and will not pick up any HSQLDB enhancements, plus Spring users are probably going to want to switch later if not now anyways. On the other hand, if we go to 1.7.2, I think that kills compatibility with older JBoss versions, and will kill db compatibility for somebody just upgrading the spring version and blindly dropping in the new jar, although they should be ok if they just copy over their old jar... Any thoughts? I am seeing extremely strange, completely repeatable behaviour, where
Petclinc in both the JDBC and the hibernate deployment, using HSQL,
starts up ok in JBoss 3.2.5, but hangs after a certain point in JBoss
3.2.6. The ejbtest sample does exactly the same thing. Weird thing in
3.2.6 is that if I shut down the external HSQL db (started with the
server.bat file), then the app starts fine (getting some obvious errors
since it can't actually talk to the db, but doesn't hang). This means
the issues are somehow related to HSQL in the 3.2.6 environment.
Here's the sequence from the JDBC version:

I'm not so sure I agree. Over and over we see people using the samples almost as is in terms of being a base template for their apps, so if we don't show the best practices there, where do we? And I would be surprised if anybody with more than 2 or 3 proxies would not want to use the parent child idiom, to reduce verbosity. I guess this is reallly a question of who the Petclinic audience is... In any case, showing both forms (in terms of a presentation) is actually a good way of showing the difference that using parent and child definitions can make, and how they work. I'll add a comment in there anyways pointing people to the other form in the manual and JPetStore, as a preferred form for most uses when there are more than a couple of proxies. jürgen höller [werk3AT] wrote: >FYI, I've modified the TransactionProxyFactoryBean definitions in Petclinic back to the simple direct version. Hello all, I've been asked to put together an outline for a Spring presentation I'll make for Atlanta's JUG ( http://www.ajug.org ) meeting for February 2005. We previously had a great presentation by Mark Eagle who did a fine job of presenting what Spring was all about. This presentation will be more focused on some more "advanced" Spring issues, more in tune with Rod's latest book, "J2EE without EJB". Does anyone have any resources that I could use for such a presentation? Perhaps previous presentations covering similar material? I'm just trying to cover my bases with the devel list before I go off writing this from scratch... Best regards, Les Les ----- "Speed is life, altitude is life insurance." |

Everybody, I've just added uploading of snapshots built in the cruisecontrol build at my place. The build is scheduled to run every day at about 11pm GMT. http://www.springframework.org/downloads/nightly/ Enjoy, A P.s. the release is the same as published on the sourceforge download pages, except for the PDF. It's missing, since I can't build that on my box (it doesn't have X). It's named springframework-1.1.2 until further notice. We might change that to 1.1.2-dev or something. P.p.s. of course this all comes without warranties ;-) |

I've looked briefly through the old getBeansOfType code, but don't have time now to actually figure out why there was no problem before. My guess is that getBeansOfType was broken for prototypes or something of that nature, and Juergen actually fixed that functionality as part of the changes. I've just changed refreshListeners() to not include prototypes, as I can't see how this would ever ben correct. This should resolve the problem. The code in AbstractApplicationContext.refreshListeners() definitely looks suspect; as you say it does a getBeansOfType(), and includes prototypes via a true flag for that param. But looking back, this code has been that way since the 1.0.2 days at least. However it looks like Juergen changed getBeansOfType() in DefaultListableBeanFactory, a couple of times in October. I'm looking into that... I am seeing some odd behavior with Spring prototypes that are also ApplicationListeners in the latest snapshot. Specifically, the context seems to be PRE instantiating and registering prototype instances that are application listeners (via a getBeansOfType call), even if no request for instantiation was made. Also, later requests for a new prototype result in that prototype not being registered as an application listener for the instantiating context. This is not the behavior I expected! I was under the assumption beans instantiated by the container that are application listeners would be auto-registered with the context after instantiation, as a post process activity. Thoughts? No. I am assuming right now you are using InternalResourceViewResolver.
All you would need to do is define the view name literal (which should still
be in the config, not hardcoded in the controller) as
redirect:viewFoo.html
in this particular case. Then the controller can just do
return new ModelAndView(getSuccessView(), "id", theId));
InternalResourceViewResolver (or rather its superclass
UrlBasedViewResolver) will see the 'redirect:' prefix, and create and use a
RedirectView itself. So the nice thing is that that controller no longer
needs to know that there is a redirect. Now keep in mind that there's
limitations to the opacity though, in terms of whether control will go to an
internal view or to a redirect, since on a redirect all the model params
need to go on the URL. So same as before, you can't stick in any arbitrary
complex property into the model and expect to be able to do a redirect...

That should still work fine. This is an indirect subclass of
UrlBasedViewResolver, where the 'redirect:' prefix support was actually
added...

The "redirect:" prefix is checked in UrlBasedViewResolver, so all its =
subclasses (InternalResourceViewResolver, VelocityViewResolver, =
FreeMarkerViewResolver) will recognize it.

Actually I just have a
org.springframework.web.servlet.view.velocity.VelocityViewResolver right
now.

Subject: Re: [Springframework-developer] successView changes
No. I am assuming right now you are using InternalResourceViewResolver.
All you would need to do is define the view name literal (which should =
still
be in the config, not hardcoded in the controller) as
redirect:viewFoo.html
in this particular case. Then the controller can just do
return new ModelAndView(getSuccessView(), "id", theId));
InternalResourceViewResolver (or rather its superclass
UrlBasedViewResolver) will see the 'redirect:' prefix, and create and =
use a
RedirectView itself. So the nice thing is that that controller no longer
needs to know that there is a redirect. Now keep in mind that there's
limitations to the opacity though, in terms of whether control will go =
to an
internal view or to a redirect, since on a redirect all the model params
need to go on the URL. So same as before, you can't stick in any =
arbitrary
complex property into the model and expect to be able to do a =
redirect...
