Patrick, thanks for the info. I'm a "hardcore" Eclipse user and I guess I need to pass the "re-learning curve" to start using IDEA effectively :-) Dmitriy. I think with 4.5 they are portable, I'm not sure if they were in previous versions. I think it's a good idea to add them. Juergen, what do you think? How have you setup things anyway, using different modules for the samples and stuff (that's why I do at least). On Mar 29, 2005, at 9:15 PM, Dmitriy Kopylenko wrote: > Dmitriy. |

Dmitriy, I know you asked Seth specifically, but I can not say enough good things about IDEA. If you are doing EJB or Web stuff, there's nothing better that I've been able to find. I keep trying Eclipse every so often, but it just feels "clunky" compared to IDEA. IDEA just gets out of my way when I need it to, but makes things I want to use in easy reach. I would highly recommend learning a lot of the shortcuts. They even have a dialog you can bring up that shows all of the productivity shortcuts, what they do, how many times you've used them, and the average time between uses. It's kinda neat. Setting up a project got a little more complicated with the 4.x series since they introduced modules, but once you get the hang of it, it's quite easy. Ok, I've done enough of a "Rah, Rah, IDEA is Great!". Give it a try, it's worth every penny. This is a valid use case (I even used it myself - duh :). I removed the=20
check and replaced it with a logging warning to notify the developer that=
=20
there is a loop in the flow and that he should double-check that that is=20
what he wants!
Thanks for the feedback!

Subject: RE: [Springframework-developer] Web Flow - Sub Flows
When doing some work with the earlier versions of webflow I did have a
case where I had a state transition to itself and would like to either
maintain the functionality or know if there is a recommended
alternative. The particular case was with a typical
query->results->detail flow where the query could yield several pages of
data and used DisplayTag to render the results. In order to allow users
to advance pages, I just created a 'page' action from the results view
state that transitioned back to itself, letting display tag render the
next page.

Hello, Would it make sense to checkin the IntelliJ project files with the spring source? I know we keep and maintain the eclipse project files, which are very helpful. I've only begun to look at IntelliJ, so not sure if their project files are as portable as eclipse's are. If they are, it would be helpful to check them in. Steven, We should likely take this off-line, but just some suggestions for neat things you could cover in your upcoming web flow article: - Demonstrate a good case for 'transitional criteria' beyond that of a signaled event within a state. Show how the path through the flow can be effected based on contextual information, for example, the value of an object in request or flow scope. - Demonstrate the use of the Multi-Action to centralize related flow action logic in one place. - Examples showing the Java based flow builder as well as the Xml flow builder. - A flow execution listener implementation, for auditing or otherwise annotating an executing client instance of a flow at specific points within its lifecycle. - Tips and gotchas related to browser navigation button use. Sounds like you've got some most of the other key features covered, like sub flows, for example. Keith -----Original Message----- From: spr...@li... The code that is in the sandbox right now explictly prevents a state from
transitioning to itself. The test is in the FlowSession.setCurrentState()
method:
if (this.currentState != null) {
if (this.currentState.equals(newState)) {
throw new IllegalArgumentException("The current state is already set
to '" + newState + "' -- this should not happen!");
}
}
Having a state transition to itself is dangerous business since you could
end up in an infinite loop!
Could you explain a bit more what you're trying to do? Why do you want to
keep restarting the subflow in a loop?

I probably should have tried the ant build before complaining. Well, I also agree if the maven build doesn't do anything ant doesn't do already, might as well not include maven configurations in the distro. What makes it confusing is some projects include a build.xml that only seems to work right when invoked by maven. Perhaps that's why I didn't realize I should just use ant. Thanks, Chris. All, I have a web flow that has a subflow state. This subflow has an end state that causes the parent flow to execute the subflow again. However, I am getting an error that states that I cannot make the state transition because I am already in the state. Is it not possible for a state to transition back to itself? Thanks, Will |

Erwin and I have completed our code reviews for web flow preview this morning. We're pretty happy, so I'm going to prepare the release now. If you guys could give it a good sanity test and review of the javadocs in org.springframework.web.flow.* that'd be great - if you see any typos or inconsistencies, let me know and I'll correct them before announcing the release. >A file-based setup approach is fine, I guess, probably with a file loaded > from the class path (same package as the HtmlUtils class itself). I'm > looking forward to reviewing the new implementation - let's see what you > came up with there :-) I use the http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/sgml/entities.html definitions. I have joined all three section within a single resource (file). To read the file I use the StreamTokenizer, but no additional library (it is a DTD resource). Sadly this doesn't come for free. I don't found a way to use a JDK library to parse DTD documents. If I missed a opportunity to use a 3rd party library supported by the current spring-framework, please give me a call. Another idea is to convert the whole document to xml (or any other format) to be able to use a more powerfull API to setup the character entity references. Beside this I think I have identified two issues about the HtmlUtils.htmlUnescape method / implementation, which both seam to be a bit inconsitent. I have created a test-case to ensure the exact behaviour of the refactored / restructurized version like the current implementation. I attached this test-case within this mail. The two identified issues can be found at the very end of the file and both are marked using '//TODO'. Please review the test-case, in the case I forgot to protect (test) a special behaviour of the current version. Cheers, Martin (Kersten) |

None of the core developers actually use maven to build Spring. The maven build artifacts are occasionally brought up-to-date but often they lag behind the current and build. The maven.xml and project.xml do givee the impression that we use maven and this is confusing. I would suggest that we either remove the maven build or commit to maintaining it along with the ant build. Personally I seee little reason to maintain two sets of build scripts. My vote is for leaving them out of the distribution. I downloaded spring-1.1.5 and tried to build using maven dist:build. The build fails because of missing dependencies: activemq-1.1 concurrent-1.3.4 I commented those out of project.xml. Next, the build created jars with manifests that have "Implementation-Version: 1.1.3", and the jars are named spring...-1.1.3.jar. Wuh? Shouldn't that be 1.1.5? Steven, That's possible now, right? The way I see it, just have your FlowAttributeMapper implementation implement BeanFactoryAware to get a callback to the factory for dependency lookup. Your implementation is likely already managed by Spring anyway, so nothing special there. Method injection would work here as well. I don't see the need for one-shot mappers, and quite like how the current implementation optimally wires the system in "for use" after configuration. If we needed a one-shot mapper, we could have a FlowAttributeMapper that was a proxy to a service lookup. Keith -----Original Message----- From: spr...@li... This is indeed what I was thinking about. The mapper is the pivot point between two sub flows. Since the Person flow requires the algorithm class the mapper to me looks like the obvious point to create it. Since the mapper is a singleton and I would like to use IoC to configure which algorithm class the mapper should use the mapper needs to create the algorithm instance on every call to 'createSubFlowInputAttributes'. This would require the use of the 'getBean' method of the application context and a string property on the mapper class to set the bean name of the algorithm class. The algorithm class would be stateful thus needs to be configured as a prototype and its instances cannot outlive the scope of a request. > > All mappers (and actions) should be stateless and there should be little > need to make them statefull. Sure. We are currently building flows to support CRUD operations on our domain objects. Let's just look at the create case, as it illustrates our problem. The user clicks a button in our application to create a new domain object. This pops up a window that contains the appropriate form. At the bottom of the form, we have buttons for Save (create and continue editing), Save and New (create and new blank form), Save and Close (create and close popup), and Cancel (close without saving). When the user clicks any of the three Save buttons, the web flow must initially do the same thing, regardless of which one was pressed (bind and create domain object). After it has finished doing that, however, all three have different behavior. The Save (create and continue editing) button brings up another interesting issue... Because we have defined each of our CRUD operations in a separate web flow, we really want to forward directly to our edit web flow after creating (we don't want to nest a subflow). While this is possible using end state and a view (forward:...), it isn't possible to send any request attributes along to the edit flow. Therefore, it is not possible to send the primary key of the domain object that we wish to edit. For now, we are working with a top level flow that contains subflow states representing each CRUD operation. By using an attribute mapper, we are trying to pass attributes from one subflow to another. It seems to be overkill however, as we really just want to be able to have end states that forward to a flow with attributes mapped. Again, perhaps we are missing something that would better support what we are trying to do? Thanks, Will On Mon, 2005-03-28 at 18:12 -0500, Keith Donald wrote: > Hmm....
