A third option under consideration is fixed-point FFTs as an option for
FPU-less machines (embedded systems mainly)
with 31 bits other than the sign bit, which limits the number of bins to
205887 for 2*PI/acos, enough to be useful for the usual sizes of a few thousand.
In any case, we probably want to prefer a large margin of extra precision
rather than sailing close to the theoretical limit where I assume that only just
being able to distinguish one bin from the one next to it is less
likely to produce
good results.
