Gentle filters sound better.  Abrupt filters keep the junk out.
_You_ have to decide what is an appropriate compromise for your
content and your ears.  Sorry.

The SoX command "lowpass" is a 3 or 6 dB/octave, so that
probably isn't abrupt enough for you.

The command "filter" can be used.  It also supports "plot" if
you wish to see a graph.  The man page give details on how to
use it.
