The gain effect takes its ratio parameter in dB, i.e. a negative number
means attenuation.

The vol effect takes its ratio parameter without any other specifier as
a linear ratio. If it is a negative number, it reverts the phase. Just
the expected behaviour, as described in the man page:

a negative gain inverts the audio signal in  addition to adjusting its
volume.
