Personally I've survived without the extra formats or the /dev/dsp on Windows by piping to external programs (eg oggenc, lame, etc). I even made my own really simple "play" and "record" programs. I generally prefer native Windows builds to Cygwin builds just because of all the issues with different programs having different versions of cygwin1.dll in their own directories, and other little things like /cygdrive/k instead of a drive letter k: popping up unexpected. On the other hand, I get the idea that piping between programs is too tricky for some people that want to use Sox on Windows, so a Cygwin build would probably be more useful for them. Is it too much trouble to have both? I think I've always used the plain text documents. But the PDF versions are formatted neater :) especially when you look at the text docs without UTF-8, because you get tabs appearing in funny places. |
