sorry, i don't seem to have easy-to-use autoreconf, etc.  but, yes, BSD 
getopt(3) doesn't recognize double colon as an optional indicator of optional. 
 (an optional parameter seems dangerous, but that's probably bordering on 
religious, so... ;-)
