what command are you actually runnning? (make sure to add -V)
Are you still seeing the error on your WinXP box?

the OP may not be back to reply, and I may be here a year and a half later, but anyhow...
I've had the exact same problem with SoX 14.4.2 since it came out, so i went back to using SoX 14.4.1 which didn't exhibit this problem.

It may work if you
before launching SoX.
