Hi T.J., I'm in the process of trying to replicate most of Slashcode features with Drupal. I've been using Slashcode for 5 years now, but due to lack of a development community, I'm switching away. I love the Slashcode system, but the price of sticking with it is too high to me now. I can tell you which Drupal modules we're planning to use if that interests you. If you're curious, take a look at the following thread: http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_name=4A30FD71.4060709%40ec.gc.ca named 'Slashcode is dead, long live Slashcode?'. Good luck with your project, whether you end up using Slashcode or not. Alex - slashgeo.org -- Alexandre Leroux, M.Sc., Ing. I want to create a community portal with stories on the front page, and yet also have a full forum integrated where users can create threads of their own (that don't show as stories on the front). In many ways, I want the front portal to operate exactly like Slashdot, so perhaps Slashcode is the best place to start. Then again, an existing Wordpress/phpbb stack might be the way to go. I'm looking for a little advice. * I want each category to be accessible via a subdomain. Slashcode does this. I believe I can do this with Wordpress-mu, which multiple blogs existing as each "category". * I want users to be able to configure which categories show up on the front page for them. Slashcode does this, but I don't believe I can do this with Wordpress. * I want Slashcode-style moderation. This is a very unique and fantastic feature. Obviously, only Slashcode does this. * Wordpress has a bevy of themes and extensions so I can better customize the appearance how I want. With Slashcode, I'd need to get my hands a little dirty. * There is existing code to easily integrate Wordpress with phpbb. And the end of the day, I'm wondering if it would be easier to either: 1 - Write a nice sexy, customized theme for Slashcode (I'm thinking of trying to integrate some HTML5/canvas features to try and push people into using newer browsers), and integrate phpbb to use Slashcode's user tables and cookies. 2 - Twist wordpress-mu into displaying multiple categories the way Slashdot does, and write a Slashcode-style moderation system from scratch. At first glance, the first option seems simpler. However, I'd like to go one step further and carry the moderation points and democratic moderation into user-created threads in the forums. So ultimately, it may mean writing a Slashcode-style moderation system in phpbb either way I go. Or perhaps there is a third option. 3 - Extend the Slashcode base to include a proper forum. Users can make journal entries, but what if there was a traditional forum? Writing a full forum from scratch can't be easy, however, there are some existing GPL Perl forum software packages that could possibly be integrated. At the very least, I'm hoping for some advice at what the best approach may be. Additionally, I certainly wouldn't mind help if there are interested parties in working on such a project. I've not messed with Slashcode nor built a httpd for it in quite some time, but when I had to play sysadmin I would build it in phases. That way after each phase, I could test the validity of it and if the daemon was OK then continue adding things into it. Here's my notes, you should be able to gleen enough information from it to build successfully I'd think. Good luck. You may even be able to just paste a lot of the below into a term window, that's how we rinsed-and-repeated until we'd get things setup correctly here. Hi All, I realise that this is a mod_perl related question, but I didn't get a response in the mod_perl ML, so I thought I'd try my luck here. I'm trying to build mod_perl along with apache as described here<http://www.slashcode.com/docs/INSTALL.html#installation_procedure> (step 3 gives the build and test instructions). When I run "make test", quite a few of the test (including the 1st one) failed. So I tried to run just the first test as follows: # make start_httpd ... letting apache warm up...\c done # cd t # ./TEST -v modules/actions.t modules/actions.t .. 1..1 fetch: `500 unexpected EOF before status line seen ' not ok 1 Failed 1/1 subtests Test Summary Report ------------------- modules/actions.t (Wstat: 0 Tests: 1 Failed: 1) Failed test: 1 Files=1, Tests=1, 0 wallclock secs ( 0.03 usr 0.08 sys + 0.27 cusr 0.11 csys = 0.49 CPU) Result: FAIL I can't work out what the problem is. Does anyone have any suggestions? These are the software versions I'm using. OpenSuse 11.1 perl: 5.10.0 mod_perl: 1.29 apache: 1.3.34 Thanks, d |

I am having some issues getting the slashcode via git. I see on the slashcode site the git address and I tried 'git clone git:// slashcode.git.sourceforge.net/gitroot/slashcode/slashcode' but that dies with an error of 'warning: remote HEAD refers to nonexistent ref, unable to checkout.' I admit my git skills are weak. I assume I am going about this wrong? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Nathan |

It's simply a human oversight. It happens. Someone changes a plugin or internal code, then the schema needed for it, but then forgets to append the change to the updates file. Typically, the best thing to do, when you find this, is file a bug report in the slashcode SF homepage. If you attach a diff -N -U3 -xCVS -r to the bug report so that all they have to do is download an apply the patch (ie it's easier for them) then it'll be pushed into the src tree that much faster. I've noticed that at some point in the last week or two, comments stopped appearing for Slashdot stories. I don't mean that the comments I write aren't appearing... I mean that ZERO comments appear at all for each and every story on the Slashdot website. At the bottom of the left-side menu I can see (for example) "127 Comments" and "127 Hidden"... but clicking either the "More" link or the "Get More Comments" buttons has no effect. It turns out that the issue is only happening with Firefox. It doesn't matter if it's Firefox 3.0.x or 3.5.x, and the issue is the same on both Ubuntu and Windows. Same when logged in or not logged in. Same across three different machines on three different ISP's. However, I feel like I'm stuck in an "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" movie, because no one else on Sashdot has mentioned this issue in comments at all. Is this REALLY a bizarre freak coincidence affecting only me? I am presently using Internet Explorer to browse Slashdot, and that feels very strange. |

Okay, am investigating this passwd issue I'm noticing ... now, this may be fixed in the sourceforge code vs the github, so I may be chasing a wild goose here ... but ... below is the email I got from the system when I setup a test account ... I went to the URL, then entered my nick and the password listed below ... login failed. I went into the mysql database and did an MD5 of the passwd, and it didn't match what was in the system, specifically, the perl script wrote in: f19036001a4a8cef153e138d2eafa9c7 But when I do an md5 of the passwd, it returns: mysql> select md5("zLFtbrqS"); +----------------------------------+ | md5("zLFtbrqS") | +----------------------------------+ | 080c38b60a0b39c6e18953b4d6d63af1 | +----------------------------------+ 1 row in set (0.00 sec) If I update the passwd entry with the proper md5, I can then login with the password no problem ... Chris, if this was a known issue, and is fixed in the sourceforge code, plesae let me know and I'll wait for git over there to be fixed and update ... Shane ... when I added the account, passwd is set to the md5 code, newpass is NULL ... just tested again to make sure it was the case before clicking on that link: mysql> select nickname, passwd, newpasswd from users where uid = 12; +----------+----------------------------------+-----------+ | nickname | passwd | newpasswd | +----------+----------------------------------+-----------+ | yScrappy | 051d7b893187bc8d170be09cfd220bbd | NULL | +----------+----------------------------------+-----------+ 1 row in set (0.00 sec) Clicking the link in the email appears to make no change to any fields in the users table ... ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Fri, 2 Oct 2009 02:17:24 +0000 From: sc...@hu... If you have received this message without having requested it, it is because someone attempted to use your username or e-mail address. It was mostly likely an innocent mistake, and they are not getting your password, so you can safely disregard this message. Thanks. In case you get multiple emails you didn't request, the requester's IP was 208.103.225.212. D'oh, looking at it further, the thought was right, fix was wrong ... There is one too many ;'s in it ... Sorry been incommunicado ... was away, busy, etc. That's right Shane, of course, and the code is all there. And I just put some links up on the web site, and I posted a story there, too. If anyone wants a tarball, I suggest you just check it out and make your own. Simple enough. I'm 99.9% certain, for the "missing perl modules" that you've encountered and emailed the list about recently, there are already Sourceforge bug issues for each. Because these are the same ones, that have been missing from the Slash::Bundle, for many years, that I recall. Please look through the SF bug list, and if you can't find them, submit a new bug for them. Sending them to this list, while informative possibly for people who don't check the SF Slashcode homepage, will get you no where with any action without the bug issue in SF (imho). Shane |
