After you add/delete/modify a topic, if you're on a development system, you should restart httpd and slashd. If you're on a production box, if it's busy enough, the httpd threads should die and the changes would eventually show themselves (or, you restart httpd and slashd). The idea behind it is that - the topics on a site don't change so much - most sites go live with a pre-planned set of topics, and only add one here or there. And there's so much data related to them, it's better to cache. |

Hi, I just subcribed to a VPS hosting company gplhost.com which uses apache2 for their control panel software. My VPS is running Debian 4.1.1-21 with apache2 installed. Question: Is there any chance that slashcode is going to work with the version of apache installed in my VPS? Hi, I wanted to use Slashcode for a forum but felt that setting up a sub domain was a bit overkill. BTW I am the Sys Admin. So far I've taken mysql 5.0.27, apache 1.3.37 and last Fridays CVS head of slash code and a custom CPAN config file and got a working slash setup, all done as non root. It did involve several bug reports to CPAN package owners and HTML-Calendar is still broke BTW, it has to be installed by hand. It's the "make test", I've reported it to the author. Everything so far has been scripted so I'll probably make a HOWTO of it later. I did have to hack the top level slash makefile to pass PREFIX and LIB args to the various perl install steps. Expect a patch for that soon. I've also found what I think is a bug in 'install-slashsite' in the handling of the "-L" arg. I found it late last night so I'm going to sit on it until I'm sure. My next problem is that the setup won't currently compile on 64 bit. But that's an apache problem. Anyway it would be nice if there was an easy way to tell slash to use relative paths or CGI args for sections rather than sub domains. Yours Faye CO GeoS Clifton Wood wrote: > Generally? Ease of use. Generally? Ease of use. It's more easy to use: http://section.domain.com/ than it is to do http://domain.com/index.pl?section=name Easier to remember for most people. The version I'm most familiar with, CVS (ie current, unreleased) has great reliance upon subdomains in the URL's. I'm going to assume that's what you are using. However, what you want can be done. We did it on a site. I don't recall if we had to patch anything, or not. But the first step for you to go about this would be to remove the URL's for any non-primaryskid skins that are nexus's. Then edit your article and save it. That'll cause slash to re-render it and the links to it. Because, technically, if your subdomains are setup, there should be no behavioral difference between http://features.some.tld/ and http:// some.tld/?section=features. And when the dispStory template is called, it should render the link to any story as either coming from the some.tld/article.pl?section=foo or some.tld/{sectionname}/ article.shtml or {subdomainforskin}.some.tdl/article.pl -- all depending on the primaryskid or the article, the skin's settings and who's requesting it (anon user, user, slashd). Try it on slashcode, or slashdot yourself if you like. http:// apple.slashdot.org/ or http://slashdot.org/?section=apple should be the same. Shane |

Hi, It is possible to configure slash so that instead of say: http://features.somemachine.example.com/..... it uses: http://somemachine.example.com/features/..... when linking from a story on the main page (http://somemachine.example.com/) to (say) a "features" article? I'd prefer not to setup an subnet just to play with slash. I did skim through the Slssh book and got through the variables list looking for something obvious. yours Faye -- --------------------------------------------------------- Faye Gibbins, Computing Officer (Infrastructure Services) GeoS KB; Linux, Unix, Security and Networks; 0131 6506426 --------------------------------------------------------- |

Hi, I'm setting up a slash site. I'd like the "Nick Name" fields to be automatically filled with the contents of $ENV{REMOTE_USER} and the passwords for everyone to be set to something like "foobar". The reason is that we have our slash Site protected by Cosign, which is a reduced sign on system based upon Kerberos. We use it at Edinburgh University to make authentication (relatively) transparent to end users. If there's an easy way to achieve this then please let me know. Otherwise I'll hack something together and submit the patches. I just saw this linked to from the top of the Slashdot homepage. http://feeds.feedburner.com/slashdot/audio (I had never seen this before because usually I'm logged into Slashdot.) I'm highly interested in the speech synthesis tool that's being used to generate this audio. This is probably the best quality output I've heard - the only one that I've ever found tolerable. I'm wondering if anybody on Slashcode might know what the tool is (otherwise, where should I ask?). Thanks in advance. |
