Like many people I am an avid Slashdot reader, and I would firstly like to thank you for producing such an excellent site. I'm not sure that this is the correct place to ask this question, if not can you please point me in the correct direction. I am writing an application that is pulling RSS feeds from (among others) Slashdot. I am not an expert with RSS, but have not had too many problems until this one. When I pull in the feed from http://rss.slashdot.org/Slashdot/slashdot I received a block of xml (which I tried to attach, but the email bounded). Unfortunately I cannot parse this with the java parser JDOM: the xml is malformed. An example of the problem is: <item rdf:about="http://ask.slashdot.org/story/11/10/07/1438230/Ask-Slashdot-Does-Being-Loyal-Pay-As-a-Developer?utm_source=rss1.0mainlinkanon&utm_medium=feed"> <title> Ask Slashdot: Does Being 'Loyal' Pay As a Developer? </title> As you can see the &utm_medium=feed is malformed. It should be &utm_medium=feed, if I understand the W3C standards correctly. I have tried a number of attempts to clean this up pre feeding into my application, with mixed success. We spent years with forums being flooded with giant ASCII penises of every conceivable variation. You can hate it, but it was a necessary decision and I stand by it. I just spent a significant portion of my life trying to improve the Slashdot community by contributing a tediously constructed comment on a technical subject. Once I had finished, I pasted my results into the comment text field and pressed `Preview', only to be greeted vacuously with the following message: Filter error: Please use fewer 'junk' characters. After a few moments of playing around, I discovered that this is yet another sour outcome of Slashdot's baroque commenting system; it turns out that my pre-formatted ASCII diagrams, though small, are being flagged as unwanted content. A little googling later, and I came across a number of comments to the effect of "I would post a code example, but Slashdot's filter thinks it's junk". So, good going! You've succeeded in stifling meaningful dialog. My immediate response at this point was to give up and get on with my life, but then roughly 2 words crystalized violently in my mind: NO, GODDAMNIT! I'm not going to be silenced by this overengineered monstrosity. The next idea I had was to use some service like `pastie.org' in order `to host' my ASCII diagrams, and then I would link to those diagrams from my Slashdot comment. However, I can't stand the thought of these links being broken over time, thereby rendering my comment into mostly useless ruins; I needed to find a solution that more strongly couples my comment with the diagrams. Moreover, I wanted to make a loud complaint about this nonsense. Hence, I've come to this mailing list to say the following: * Your commenting system sucks ass. For all of the effort that you've put into making it as intricately moderated as possible (and I've tried to spend my moderation points properly!), it not only doesn't improve the quality of the comments beyond what a simpler system can achieve, but it also actively diminishes the quality (not to say that my comment in particular is of high quality; however, others have no doubt been quashed). If you want an example of a commenting system that consistently yields excellent comment threads with decent fomatting and linking and moderation, then look to copying something like that of Reddit. * As an unintended consequence of Slashdot's nonsensical system, I have decided to post my code examples and ascii diagrams here to this list and then embed into my comment a link to the archived email as a reference. I will do this whenever I find the need. I figure that as long as Slashdot is around to host my comments, then this mailing list is also going to be around to host my content, thereby providing the stable coupling that I desire. Sincerely, Michael Witten |

Is there a way to do so *safely*? Unlike stories, there doesn't appear to be a 'delete comment' option even at the admin level, and, well, I'd like to remove the 1800 garbage/spam comments from the top article on haxlash.org right now :( I can do it at the DB level, but considering the schema really wasn't designed for referential integrity (it *is* MySQL, so no surprise there), I'm afraid to do so lightly ... ---- Marc G. Still going through setup, but I jsut setup a new site using the 'install-slashsite' command ... everything appeared to setup fine ... http://announceyoursite.net ... visually need work, and no content there yet ... Still have work through silencing some issues in the code itself ... Does anyone know how to determine what plugins were installed on a site *after* it is installed? I got the answer seen above: I wonder if all the slash, etc. install has created those environmental problems??? If I compile an apache1.3 + mod_perl in this environment ... how will it end? I will try on a pc with no apache2 first. My googling also suggested that Apache::ExtUtils was a module that just a few other software packets than slash use. This could be the reason why it won't install in connection with debian's apache2 mod_perl: There is no one to file bug reports ;-) Flem |

Sorry. :( No problem, I suppose ... since it shall not be integrated into debian ... I am convinced that would not be a simple Sunday afternoon task. Uarghh, this is definitely nasty. I am not happy with rebuilding my apache server outside debian's system. I just tried to build libapache2-mod-perl2 from debian source, but I did not succeed (it waited on the server (?) ...). In case I build my apache, I will end up with packages that are incompatible with the debian-apache-system. To keep my debian system I have to convert the compiled server to debian packages, which is not far from rebuilding the whole debian-apache system. This will take me days .... and I would actually build a competing apache-debian-system - perhaps the debian guys are better than I am! Probably, I will end up with ruined webserver. In short, installing slash requires that start up a new webserver. A better solution seems to be to fix the bugs in debians mod_perl. But, I am not able to do this since my perl-knowledge is meager. > Your best bet is to try and follow the instructions here: > > http://www.misterorange.com/docs/INSTALL-Slash-For-Dummies.html I have followed it quite carefully. > > Make the appropriate replacements for versions. There was a bug in a Perl module under installation of slashcode 2.5.2 (on a debian squeeze stable). > install Bundle::Slash ...... /usr/bin/perl t/TEST local/compatibility.t .. Can't locate object method "parse_head" via package "LWP::Parallel::Protocol::http" at ../blib/lib/LWP/Parallel/UserAgent.pm line 1497, <DAEMON> line 1. Missing base argument at local/compatibility.t line 57 ..... ..... MARCLANG/ParallelUserAgent-2.57.tar.gz /usr/bin/make test -- NOT OK ............... The bug is described here, where you also find a patch: http://rt.cpan.org/Public/Bug/Display.html?id=40261 To fix it, the module ParallelUserAgent must be downloaded: http://cpan.uwinnipeg.ca/cpan/authors/id/M/MA/MARCLANG/ParallelUserAgent-2.57.tar.gz After unpacking, line 1496 in UserAgent.pm should be changed from: $protocol->parse_head($parse_head); to: $protocol->can('parse_head') ? $protocol->parse_head($parse_head) : $protocol->_elem('parse_head', $parse_head); Then compile and install the ParallelUserAgent module as describes in README. Finally, you can go back to the perl prompt and run again: > install Bundle::Slash and no errors should come out. Flemming |

Dear All I have followed various tutorials of installation of slashcode. And eventually, I got installed the relevant modules (not least Bundles::Slash) and created a mysql database. Then, I unpacked Bundled-Slash.2.52 and cd into it. Then: perl Makefile.pl (which created a Makefile) make make install But, nothing seems to happen. There is no /usr/local/slash or /etc/init.d/slash. I have looked in the makefile, but I have little knowledge about the different funktions and variables so I am quite lost. Could anyone help me? I use debian Squeeze on a 32-bit small tosiba laptop with intel processor that I use as server. Flemming |

Just did an upgrade from perl 5.10 -> 5.12 and everything *so far* appears to be running fine ... I am getting a couple of errors in the logs to investigate: UNIVERSAL->import is deprecated and will be removed in a future perl at /usr/local/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.12.3/LWP/Parallel/UserAgent.pm line 10 defined(%hash) is deprecated at /usr/local/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.12.3/LWP/Parallel/UserAgent.pm line 1327. (Maybe you should just omit the defined()?) but as far as I can tell, it isn't preventing things from working ... ---- Marc G. With the new code repo that is setup, all *known* issues have been worked out with the install, at least as far as FreeBSD is concerned ,,, www.haxlash.org right now is running "out of the box" ... I am currently looking into verifying that Perl 5.12.x works, as apparently CentOS has that installed by default, but, again, on FreeBSD, *so far*, all appears to be installing fine, where George is having issues with the ParallelUA perl module ... One thing that would be useful in the documentation is how to install Slashcode, with the assumption that the person has never used Perl and is not familiar on how to install all the necessary dependencies.
