You should run slashd. regarding the recent thread on the slashcode poll about feature requests and so on, i talked about 'persistent articles' or those meant to never 'die' and thus would always be around for converstation. the example i gave was 'HTML help' on a webmaster's resource site. krow has also obviously been thinking about it as well. i saw this post on slashdot regarding the bender beta... http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=01/01/16/1854229&cid=7 "If slashcode is free and Free why do other message boards keep selling? It just happens to have a message board attached to each news story" so atleast other people notice this as well. in my opinion it's the only thing holding slash back from making all of those other toy-ish solutions obsolete. i think slash would really pick up a lot of additional userbase with some robust support for message board type functionality. congrats on the beta btw. :) |

Ok, anyone who pulls from CVS should reinstall from scratch. There is now a Slash::Install module that contains a lot of the logic in an install (at some point maybe all). All plugin logic is in it, and you can now use install-plugin if you want to install a plugin after installing a slashsite. Small modifications to the .conf files that are done automagically leave authentication in the VirtualHost. The DB call getTemplate() is now getTemplateByName() and the call getTemplateByID() is now getTemplate(). All those who follow the naming scheme should be able to see why. All of the files that references these should be updated now. Fixing the postgreSQL schema to run the new install should be finished in a bit. -Brian |

I just committed the new install for slashcode to cvs. Basically this gives you the option of not having to dink as much with the httpd.conf. I can already tell you that this is not fool proof (for instance, the way I have my firewall setup, keeps this from working for me). Feedback would be appreciated. -Brian |

It's designed expressly for Slashdot, however if you want I can grab the
articles and try to parse them out and give you the resulting code.

Well, considering that it's more a Slashdot-util (as opposed to a Slashcode
util) it's not in the repository. It relies on precise regular expressions to
extract the comment data and these can change dramatically between sites.
I may adopt it for a more general purpose utility when I update it for Bender.

Where can I get a hold of that routine (the pre-Bender version)? A number of stories on Nanodot got archived before I knew that feature existed; I'd like to bring 'em back to life if possible.
I looked around in both the Bender and pre-Bender distributions ("utils" etc.), but didn't find anything that looked likely.

In bender, to escape data in a URL parameter, use fixparam. For example:
[% FILTER fixparam; aid; END %]
Or in Perl:
fixparam($aid)
Similarly, for TEXTAREA contents always use "strip_literal", for form
elements (INPUT VALUE="...") always use "strip_attribute". This is all
documented in the Slash::Utility manpage, and in the Slash::Display manpage.
It is better to not pre-filter variables before passing them to a template.
i.e., for awhile we were doing:
slashDisplay('template', {
aid_param => fixparam($aid),
aid_form => strip_attribute($aid),
});
We've instead been moving toward passing plain variables, and leaving it to
the template to fix them with the proper filter.

OK, all my commits are in and reasonably well-tested. We've been starting to work on a few new slash sites using slash-1.1.0-bender, which I guess is the first alpha, and already there are several differences between this alpha and what's in the CVS repository.
