Today I noticed a very funny behaviour of /. in Opera 9.61 on Windows XP Pro with all SP and patches installed.

On the start page the titles of the articles are mostly black (where they should be white). But sometimes parts(!) of them appear white. In those cases, the black/white border appears anywhere in the title, and it even cuts through single letters. Reloading changes the pattern but the general problem persists.

The problem does not appear on the pages showing a single news item with comments. It appears only on the starting page.

I noticed this behaviour for the first time today (Monday), but I then again I was cut off the internet since Friday.

The problem remains for XP and makes Slashdot practically unreadable under Opera.

I just tried Opera under Ubuntu 8.04: Both Opera versions at hand, 9.51 and 9.62, work without a problem.

It seems the problem is confined to Opera on Windows, and possibly only to the latest versions (did not try earlier ones).

I changed the subject hoping that this would help raise attention to this problem. Sorry, I am not a CSS expert and can only submit my reports... There seem to be many changes to the code recently, so I hope someone looks also into this problem.

Yeah, I agree on this bug. I've been in pain for a few weeks straining my eyes to read the headlines (sometimes using CTRL+A to highlight the entire page just so it's readable). I'm not giving up Opera...

Can we increase the priority on this bug please?

Still occurs on my Opera 9.63.

Workarounds include
> /. is beta testing with anynomous users, make an account and you can remove the beta thingie, after that everything is working right. Or you can mask Opera to internet explorer if you don't want to make an account there.

Here's some extra screenshot - http://screencast.com/t/Ee8BTcPK - which shows it's a platform-specific issue. If the /. team confirms it's not a defect in their webpage, then this should be escalated to the Opera dev team.

I just updated to Opera 9.64 (on XP with SP3) - and it works flawlessly for me.

I just wonder whether the Opera devs programmed a workaround for the Slashcode or whether there was really a problem in the Browser. Anyways, I am glad, this seems to be over.

Could anyone else please confirm this. Then I would change the status to fixed.

I confirm that the headlines are now colored white instead of black, and there scrolling glitches that appeared earlier seem gone. Finally :)
