Instead of the traditional idea of "forums" that are
defined by topic, why not have one big thread archive
that is searchable by keyword.

So instead of there being a "Linux Networking" forum, I
can just search the archive for threads with keywords
linux and networking. The search results make up my
"virtual forum" on my topic.

We could provide links for common keyword searches, as
well as things like "last ___ posts", "last ___
searches", and "threads you've participated in". You
could also bookmark your most common searches, etc...

Posts could either be scanned for keywords on
submission, or alternately users could provide their
own keywords for posts (so that posts that read "Don't
use Windows" wouldn't show up in a keyword search for
"windows").

This feature will be heavily dependant on whatever search
method the CMS will use. From what I can tell just by
thinking about it, that means the forum module will either
need to provide its own search methods, or it will need to
be compatible with an external (to the module) search method
    module.

Also, this feature is going to have to be done in a way that
it will be nearly immune to abuse. A good example of that
would be an automated indexing system, much like Google's. I
don't want to rely on the Google API, for obvious licensing
    and privacy reasons.

I will look into search methods later this week, and I'll
post my findings sometime closer to the first part of next week.
