    This is Crash Report.

That's weird, there was no problem with 10.14.

Do you have the "Hoefler Text" in the "Black Italic" typeface installed on your computer? You may check that using a font panel, e.g. from TextEdit.app. This should be present on any mac computer.

I checked the font settings and found that "Hoefler Text" was invalidated. After enabling this font, Skim 1.4.37 could be launched. Thank you very much.
However, I would like to make an improvement so that even if "Hoefler Text" is disabled, it can be started.

I enabled a backup font to use if Hoefler Text is not available.

But I should not have to do this, it shows that it is a bad idea to disable fonts that are pre installed, developers may depend on it.

"Hoefler Text" is not a mandatory font for Mac OS systems. The user can freely turn on / off.
Therefore, in the case of a minimum font environment, it is a developer's duty to display a dialog notifying the font necessary for startup instead of crashing.

Had exactly the same problem. The user definitly should be warned if specific fonts have to be active for the program to start up.

Many thanks for your hint, @Christiaan

    Edit:

Just seen the 1.4.38 update which seems to address the issue.

Yes, 1.4.38 substitutes the system default font when a font is not available.
