Ok, now that I look at it more closely - the 'max-width' actually doesn't help here. If the form table should be as wide as possible, so that textareas are as wide as possible, there is probably no way around making the whole table 'width: 100%'. I was using the 'formtable' class only because the table headers ('th') were formatted the way I want them, but I can easily put those two attributes (text-align: left; vertical-align: top) into another custom class, and use that one instead.
