I know it will probably not help you in the short term, but this kind of thing, along with the impossibility to get a simple list of categories, made me add a default property to all of my semantic templates : [[Has class::<category name for that template>]] This allows me to query pages by categories using a text string. It also gives me a way to query only pages for a category when I don't want to use SMW built-in inheritance. For the same reason, I added a : [[Has page name::{{PAGETITLE}}]] .. to allow me to query page titles using wildcards.
