SMW requires to be reviewed by MediaWiki release manager to be deployed at Wikimedia sites, including the Wikipedia. It has to be compact and efficient enough for deploying in wikipedia. I believe they have mentioned that it's code was a bit too large. It is efficient for small and medium sites, but English or German wikipedias are not medium. 2. Some of Wikimedia coders were skeptical whether the benefits will outweigh the burden of supporting extra properties, complained that for some purposes there is not enough flexibility (limited n-aries, perhaps?). 3. Wikipedia hardware seems to be already highly loaded, their DB engineer wrote recently that newly introduced flagged revisions feature may soon require an additional high-class server purchase. What would require SMW, something even more expensive? Wikimedia operates on much smaller budget than another world top10 sites. I am a bit worrying about SMW future in general, to me it seems that Markus is very busy these days. I still have a dream to create a medium-size wiki with it, but also currently don't have enough of the time :-( Dmitriy |
