The attached example comes from a discussion at the ST STM8 forums. SDCC generates much bigger code than Cosmic here (mostly due to too many temporaries being introduced; a minor improvement could come from a different calling convention).

The generated asm improved a lot with the rematerialization support in the stm8 backend; with the pointer read improvement in [r10623], it looks okay now.
