Sorry, sorry, sorry. Not Ben's fault at all!

I turns out the problem was on my side: For some reason, Internet Config
started mapping files with the *.l extension into APPL, not TEXT types. Then
my local CVS client binhexed it before diffing it against Ben's changes.
Doh.
