I concur with what others have suggested wrt modifying the registration process. As it looks like the spammers are using an automated tool, I think we only need to make our registration process sufficiently non-standard to foil the tool and hence the spammers. So let's add a really simple question (or set of questions) and be done with it. I like the King's suggestion but since someone actually needs to do this, rather than talk about it, I posit that the scale of the attack does not exceed the hactivation threshold of those who might choose to hack what is presumably TWiki's core code. I posit that the hackivation threshold of altering the signup process is lower. Tony's suggestion pushes too much work onto the editors, in my opinion. Talking of hactivation thresholds: I've got a load of work right now, but might get to looking at this end of this week.
