Philip Ward at the University of Stirling was kind enough to send the=20 following message: ---------------- Firstly, thanks for Rolodap. It=92s a great piece of software that works=20 really well once you can get it working. I had a couple of issues that bugged me that meant some code fixes in=20 order to get it working. I=92ve installed Rolodap on a Debian Woody machine, just in case these=20 issues are specific to the software versions that are part of Woody. Firstly in auth.phtml on line 69 the ldap_bind contains an @ character=20 that prevents the ldapBind variable from receiving the correct result,=20 thus breaking the logon screen. Secondly ldapadd.phtml and ldapedit.phtml use AUTH_SERVER_BIND_AS and=20 AUTH_SERVER_BIND_PASSWORD which does not work. Using BIND_AS and=20 BIND_PASSWORD did the trick. Finally sample.ldif is broken. Look for roloaplastuid and change it to=20 rolodaplastuid. Also make sure that there are no spaces between the=20 attributes and the colons. ------------------------------- Philip will be subscribing to the list and I will post his patches when=20 I get them. We should have some additional people joining us soon, including a
German developer who has been interested in standardizing PIM schemas
for some time (he is on vacation till October 25th). I am still trying
to interest more.
Perhaps we could take a first stab at outlining the work to be done?
Here would be my list:
1. Schema
--- works with openLDAP2.x normal schemae
--- compatibility with Mozilla? Evolution? Kaddressbook? phpGroupware?
I suspect that the real trick here is to have a base schema and then to
make it easy to use other schemae -- sort of different personalities?
2. Mass emailing. Rolodap has the ability to send emails to a list
selected from the LDAP directory. However a true group emailer normally
knows how to handle bounces, address changes, etc. Perhaps we should be
looking at how to make Rolodap work with something like Mailman or Limez?
3. Deletions. It is very difficult to make a deletion from Rolodap,
because an address may be used by multiple people. Perhaps we need a
mechanism where everybody who uses an address (or has it in their book)
gets notified and has the opportunity to sign off on a deletion.
4. General code cleanup
5. Word Processors . At a minimum we should work out how to use
Rolodap as an address source for OpenOffice. there is a primtive csv
output for word processors, but OO has the ability to use an LDAP directory.
6. ???
What are other's thoughts?

I am located in Oregon, Wisconsin, a small town just south of Madison. I am an old fart, and a retired lawyer. I have some programming experience, now long obsolete, have served on a number of standards committees, have been a speaker at Networld, Comdex, Computers Freedom&Privacy Conference, and have consulted on technology. I am interested in copyright and open source issues. Rolodap was originally developed by Dan Freed who was an employee of my former law firm. I supported his effort and encouraged the firm to open source the result. I am interested in seeing Rolodap develop in several ways: 1) I would like to see its schema become more standardized and more flexible (which may seem a bit contradictory) 2) I would like to see it become easier to install and use. 3) I would like to see it better able to interact with other programs like OpenOffice and emailers. Many seem to see a need to include a directory/addressbook with their emailer or wordprocessor. I would like Rolodap to be flexible enough to meld in with other products and become their addressbook. 4) I am a big LDAP fan and I would like for Rolodap to increase the number of developers familiar with LDAP And...I'd like it to be a fun project for evryone to work on. Hi List, I'm Ben Dugdale in Concho, AZ. I work as a network administrator and have been using Linux and Open-Source software for about four years. I gave Rolodap a run perhaps a year ago, but have reverted back to hand-edited ldif imports for my personal contact management. My relevant experience is in PHP, Linux administration, and frustration with incompatible LDAP schemas. I really don't have all that much free time on my hands, but would like to help out anyway. I'd like to see greater schema compatibility with Mozilla and/or Active-Directory. Hi, Rolodap users and developers, Sourceforge only updates the subscriber information for lists once a week, so I don't know who is on this list. Perhaps people could take just a second and introduce themselves? Nothing fancy -- your name or nickname, areas you would like to work in, any thoughts you have on Rolodap's direction..... . Over the next week or so we can then perhaps organize the update effort. So, let us know briefly about yourself. Regards, John Lederer |
