The refined statemachine and states get their names from the statemachine/state they refine. Therefore, in the refined statemachine, after changing the abstract name the refines link is broken and you need to select the new refines relationship in the refinement. If you change the statemachine name, you may need to also re-establish the refines links of the states within it.
I agree it is not easy to rename the statemachine, but it would be difficult to fix this. Possibly, the refactoring facilities we are working on might help.
