In Emacs+ESS, there is a shortkey for writing <-, namely <right shift><key on the left of right shift>. Possibility for setting this up would be very nice. Maybe Gedit itself has such a feature, but I haven't looked at it thoroughly, I have to admit.

I don't know how to set this kind of shortcuts in gedit (and a quick search didn't help) so I might have to implement it in rgedit; I'll try to do it and see how it goes...

After some searching, it turns out that gedit has a "Snippet" plugin (included in the standard package on Debian for example), which allows ou to define shortcuts for pieces of code. I just defined a Ctrl+Shift+? for <- limited to R files and it workd just fine!
Now, I am not sure you can use make a distinction betwee RightShift and LeftShift (I didn't manage to in my brief test) but seems to be doing (kind of) what you were looking for.
