Hi, Dear all I have a multi-agent modeling of online community. Finding the right = software has been torturing me for a while. I happened to find Repast = last week, and I was wondering whether Rapast is suitable for my model. = I would appreciate it a lot if any of you can give me some ideas of the = viability. Basically, in my model, I have agents and public place. --------------------------------------- Agents:=20 1) each participant of the online community is modeled as an agent, and = it has a lot of parameters describing their learning capabilities, = social capabilities, communities's attactiveness to the agent, etc. = These parameters are randomly assigned when the agents are generated, = and will dynamically change over the time.=20 2) Agents are not always in the community. Each agent periodically = visits the community once it is generated(based on some time = distribution), and when the attractivenss of the community to the agent = decrease to zero, it will never come back again (it's like it died) 3) every time an agent visit the community, agent will initiate message, = read others' message, and reply others' message.The detail of the = activities, such as how many message to generate, which message to = reply, are controlled by the learning and social parameters of the = agent.=20 Public place:=20 1) The online community is simplified as a public place, where the = agents can post messages, read messages, and reply others' messages. = Each message is represented by a set of parameters determined by the = parameters of the agent who posted the message. Public place is = represented by a list of messages. Messages are not necessary stored = forever, and they will be cleared up after a period of time. 2) The interactions among agents are the achieved through the public = place. This means that there is no direct agent-to-agent interaction. = When agents post messages, it potentially will affect other agents if = other agents read the message and even respond to them. -------------------------------------------------------- I have a set of interesting questions to answer based on the simulation = results. For example, I want to study how the different composition of = population (different types of agents with different learning = capabilities and social capability) lead to the different growth pattern = of the online community.=20 Do you think Repast is good for my purpose? If it is, could you please = provide me some suggestions on which components or steps I should take = when implementing my model in Repast. If it is not, do you have any = suggestions on other software? Thanks a ton! Yiwen=20 |

Charlie, I'm afraid we never got very far with modularity, at least in the way you are talking. That said, you should probably look at the PropertyDescriptor class. Classes that extend this are used to present more complicated properties and gui widget to the user. For example, the ListPropertyDescriptor forces the user to choose from a limited list of items. If you dig through the source code for that and related classes in the uchicago.src.reflector package, that should help. There is also a how to on property descriptors, I think. Lastly, the ability to view agent and model properites was enhanced in repast 3. I don't know much about that, but hopefully other developers on the list (which I've cc'd) can help you there. Rob, No it wasn't at least not by the developers. You may want to ask on the users list to see if anyone there furthered the implementation. I am in search of a framework that includes the genetic operators, in which my agents could evolve more or less of certain traits (those I allow to vary) - something like the "Evo" framework developed for Swarm. Is there such a thing within RePast (or otherwise)? Thankyou, Rob |

Hmm. Good question...
Seriously, there's no good reason. Just a mistake.

Why AbstractGUIController have attibutes CONSOLE_ERR and CONSOLE_OUT as
static, and methods setConsoleOut(boolean) and setConsoleErr(boolean) as
non-static ?
Below is the source code of the method setConsoleOut(boolean) :
public void setConsoleOut(boolean out) {
AbstractGUIController.CONSOLE_OUT = out;
}

Walter, I received the following from the colt list. The normal distribution does indeed draw two from the stream and caches one. So, I think this explains the behavior. Nick -----Original Message----- From: Adrian Kujaneck Agogino [mailto:ag...@ec...] Sent: Tuesday, October 19, 2004 2:23 PM To: Nick Collier Cc: co...@li... Subject: Re: Strange interaction between uniform and normal It looks like the uniform distribution asks the random generator for a single number for each call to "nextDouble." The normal distribution asks for two, generates two normally distributed numbers and caches one of them. If they are drawing from a common random number generator, this would explain what you are seeing. -adrian On Mon, 18 Oct 2004, Nick Collier wrote: > Sorry, if this is a repeat. Curious random number behaviorI made a quick test case to investigate this
further. It looks with seed 4 (and maybe others), there is a strange odd /
even kind of behavior w/r to the skips. By this I mean that the first draw
from normal after 2 skips is the 3rd item in a 0 skip draw, and the first
draw from normal after 4 skips is the fifth item in a 0 skip draw.
Similarly, the first draw after 3 skips is the 3rd item in a 1 skip draw.
But the two "odd" and "even" streams are not the same. I'm not sure if this
is erroneous behavior, although it might be, given that if you use the same
seed and do the same number and kind of draws you end up with the same
behavior.
Note that if the skip does a draw from normal, this behavior does NOT occur.
At any rate, repast uses the colt library for random number generation and
I'll poke around that and see what I can find out.

Subject: [Repast-developer] Curious random number behavior
Our model creates a random network, then imposes a random pattern of
sources and sinks. We want to try various source/sink stressors on the same
network, and do this by throwing away a specified number of random samples
between the network generation and the stress generation. Different numbers
of discards give us different source/sink patterns. The odd result is that
for some random seeds we get the identical sequence of sampled values
following two different numbers of discarded samples. The relevant section
of code is:
private void discardSamples(Element parameterDefinition) {
String spareSamples =
parameterDefinition.getAttributeValue("randomOffset");
if (spareSamples != null) {
int skips = (int)Double.parseDouble(spareSamples);
for (int i=0; i < skips; i++) {
System.out.print("Skipping
"+Random.uniform.nextInt()+"\n");
}
for (int i=0; i < 10; i++) {
System.out.print("Testing
"+Random.normal.nextDouble(0.0,1.0)+"\n");
}
}
}
The attached file shows some output for "seed 4" after discarding 1, 3,
and 2 samples, and for a second seed "seed 1" after discarding 1, 3, and 2
samples. In particular for"seed 4", we see the same sample values if we
throw away one sample or three samples. If we throw away two samples, the
subsequent samples differ. For "seed 1", the samples following 3 discards
are offset from those following 1 discard by 1 value, while the sequence
following 2 discards seems unrelated to the other sequences. The latter
result for "seed 1" perhaps makes sense since the discards are samples of
integers while the "real" samples are double precision values, but I can't
understand the "seed 4" results at all. Any leads would be welcome...

Hi, Can anybody confirm what libraries were used to develop Repast-2.2? For example did it use a newer version of colt than colt1.0.3? And so on... Thanks, Alex Tulai |

All, With eye to cleaning up the repast cvs tree, can any of y'all tell me what the state of VDC, repast-gt and repast-mavenized is? I know what repast-mavenized is, but what are the others? Can we delete everything but the main repast module? Also, there is another repast-gt directory below repast/src/. What is this? Can we delete it? thanks, Nick ---------------------- Nick Collier Software Developer Note New Email: nic...@ve... |
