What do you mean by "recently opened games"? In play by email, the program appends a player name and timestamp to the filename. Would you be able to set it up to search the directories where games were previously saved, find the most recent timestamped file with the appropriate base filename, and list that? -- Chris Please consider the environment before printing this e-mail. The imports are result of mishandling Eclipse. I am not used to it yet (and on the search how to switch short-cuts to Windows-style...) Sorry for that. I personaly do cosmetic changes if they make code styl consistent but its your call. Now I was thinking of a redesign of initial window. So that the application lists recently opened games for example. What do you think of it? OK. I identified the error. The problem is with NDC. You use it to store game id or whatever you use then to query a map for GameManager. This structure is per-thread. If you load game after running application it is initialized in the AWT events thread (while acting on load game event) and so it later works well in other events. However if you load the game using command line argument NDC is initialized from the main thread and in events thread (used by File | Save) there is no knowledge about the id. By the way it seems like a mighty abuse of the object... I will try to fix that... I already added (locally on my machine) code responsible for setting save directory if a game is opened from command line argument. This was not done (the path was only set if the application was run without command line argument and the game was opened from within the application) and was kind of annoying (to me at least). This occurs in current released version and most likely also in trunk (as the code is not executed) - however that cannot be verified well until Save works. And regarding the Save the problem again occurs only if the game is opened by giving its path as command line argument. I already traced it to problems with NPC.peek() returning an empty string rather then "01" in Save action code which casues failure to finde GameManager instance. Strange as it seems from my debuging that NPC.peek() ought to return "01" as it was pushed there. Now I'm at looking into log4j to see what this actually does and how should be used. If I will manage to do anything good I will open a different thread with more details (as it is somewhat off-topic here). Just a quick note. It seems there is a bug. If a game is opened by giving it as an argument "File | Save" results in NullPointerException for GameManager.getInstance(). Using "https://rails.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/rails/trunk/18xx" instead of "https://rails.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/rails/trunk" did the thing! Thanks! Now I will have a look into changes so to see whether my issues were solved. Do you have any pending tasks? Didn't help. In my case there was no "Rails" in configuration name instead there was generic "New_configuration" or something like that. But this is not important (however it suggests that I have done soemthing incorrectly). The Main tab asks for Project (empty for me; clicking Browse shows empty list; I left this empty) and Main class (is entered rails.util.RunGame however pressing Search shows an empty list). After that trying to run this results in a message that class rails.util.RunGame could not be found. So once again how do you initialize the workspace. After installing Eclipse and setting up Subclips (in SVN Repositories I have added "https://rails.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/rails") I opened Eclipse. It asked for workspace so I went with the default one. Then I chose from menu File item Import, then SVN / Checkout Projects from SVN. There I chose the existing rails repository. From the repository I chose "trunk". Then instead of "Check out as a project configured using the New Project Wizard" I chose "Check out as a project in workspace" and left the default project name (being "trunk"). Then Finish. So I guess it is not the proper way. I use new Eclipse 3.6.1. Classic gener with only Subclipse added. I have downloaded Eclipse and chose Subclipse as SVN manager. I did have some problems as I am using 64-bit Windows 7 and apparently Subclips has issues with 64-bit systems. However it seems to work now as I am able to download code from within the Eclipse. EV: I also had problems with Subclipse on my new 64-bit Windows-7 PC and have changed to Subversive. But I haven't yet done anything substantial on that new machine yet. Yet I would gladly hear some more advice on configuring Eclipse. Mere File | Import | SVN | Checkout from SVN does not seem to be enough. I sure do get the trunk however as this is not a project so I'm unable to run it (particularly in debug mode as this is what I truly wish to do). How do you do it? Sorry for such noob questions but I have been using Eclipse only for a short time around 5 years ago (I'm Windows/Visual Studio/C++ & somewhat C# developer). Thanks in advance! EV: I suppose what you need to do is create a Run Configuration. Run (or the middle green button on the 2nd row) | Run Configurations... | New (button), then: - in the Main tab, enter the run name (I found Rails pre-filled) and the main class name: rails.test.GameTest (or the newer and perhaps better rails.util.RunGame). - in the Arguments tab, enter any VM arguments that you want the program to pick up as System properties. I'm using: -Dlog4j.configuration=my_my.properties -DRevenueCalculation=Suggest -Dsettings.directory=../save/settings Running this configuration starts Rails under Eclipse. I hope this helps. Erik. [mailto:ab...@o2...] Verzonden: donderdag 20 januari 2011 8:40 Aan: Development list for Rails: an 18xx game Onderwerp: Re: [Rails-devel] Development Environment OK. Erik. I'm happy enough with the current window position fixation code, but the real question is if you all are. Since the 1.4 release not much else has changed, apart from a number of fixes (I have composed a partial change list in the wiki on the Sourceforge project page). However, I don't expect to be able to do any significant work until April or May, apart from the occasional bug fix. So perhaps it is a good idea to wrap it all up in a new release 1.4.1, so you can all enjoy it and/or report new bugs :-) Brett, what do you think? What development environment (IDE) do you use while making Rails? (If any at all...) It seems to me there are some project files or something similar but I wasn’t able to recognize what application uses them. I ask this question as I wanted to look into code and possibly change some things (at least for me) as while playing we noticed few annoying issues. (The application does not have recently opened files list, it seems also it does not work well if run using a batch command from other folder then the application itself to name a few.) Adam Badura |

For some answes\rs, see blow. Erik. Van: Charles Strong [mailto:men...@gm...] Verzonden: zaterdag 15 januari 2011 21:24 Aan: rai...@li... Onderwerp: Re: [Rails-devel] Rails 1.4 Creating games I've got svn with eclipse. I'm not sure how to compile it after making changes or what steps I should do with it. EV: I always set Eclipse to autocompile on save. Also I've been editing the XML files to create new games. I'm having some major bugs and/or issues. When I copy a game then I can only use tiles from the game I copied. Once I try putting in a tile from a different game then my tile manifest will show zero tiles available and I can't start public companies on that tile if it's a city tile. Even when I edit tiles.xml file it won't show the changes. EV: You need to change both Tiles.xml and TileSet.xml. Best is to start with the latter, and then fill the game-specific Tiles.xml with copies of the corresponding tile definitions from the generic Tiles.xml (under tiles). You can also generate Tiles.xml from TileSet.xml with class tools.MakeGameTileSets. Or I can do that for you, as well as create any new tiles that are not yet included in the generic Tiles.xml. I think the problem is in the game.xml file. When I copy over an existing game like 1830 and then change the game name to something like 18Test the game won't start up and it errors out. If I keep it at 1830 but change the gamelist.xml file then it shows up in the menu as 18Test but with the problems above. EV: You need to do both. I guess the question is how do I start a game from scratch? And if this isn't possible how do I pull in tiles from other games if I copy a game over? This has been very frustrating. |

I've got svn with eclipse. I'm not sure how to compile it after making changes or what steps I should do with it. I think the problem is in the game.xml file. When I copy over an existing game like 1830 and then change the game name to something like 18Test the game won't start up and it errors out. If I keep it at 1830 but change the gamelist.xml file then it shows up in the menu as 18Test but with the problems above. I guess the question is how do I start a game from scratch? And if this isn't possible how do I pull in tiles from other games if I copy a game over? This has been very frustrating. |

Charles - Welcome to the list! Creating games is a combination of configuration and coding, depending on what the game entails. The map, stock market, and other basic details are configured via XML files. For games that simply re-use the rules of existing, already implemented games, it's fairly easy to write-up the XML, drop it into the correct locations, updating the master game lists, and have Rails begin attempting to play a new game. The game rules, if they deviate from already implemented game rules, will require additional coding to implement those special cases. This requires extending the game code, which is written in Java. Your first steps should be to set up your IDE (most of us use Eclipse), check out the code from SVN, and begin familiarizing yourself with the code base as well as looking through the mailing list archives. If you have any questions (or patches you'd like applied to SVN), feel free to post them to the list. :-) ---Brett. I've been using Rails to run different 18xx games that I have. However there are a few that aren't even in the Rails program but would like to play using it. Once our group started using Rails we have a hard time trying to run one without, it just saves a lot of time and calculations. I'm looking into creating the game files for Rails to use for the games it doesn't currently have. I'm also looking at creating my own 18xx to be used in Rails. I was wondering how would I do this? I'm not a stranger to basic programming, html, etc. so the technical learning curve isn't an issue (that and I'm a quick learner). |

OK, thanks. I have added Windows settings and Change log pages (the latter still pretty empty). Perhaps we could also do that in the Wiki. Per change item I would suggest to include: - date, - author, - SVN revision numbers (useful though not essential), - the bug report/feature request number (if applicable), - description of the change, - optionally the main source file(s) affected (not necessary for consequential effects such as caused by method name changes etc.) It doesn't need to be perfect, but something is better than nothing.
