I like the automation option and will use it, but can see many situations (especially people playing at work) where it could be tragic. The proposed configuration option sounds like a perfect solution to me. -- Chris Please consider the environment before printing this e-mail. I agree that this option should not scare anyone (I never had this intention): I had put down this as a todo after the discussion of the copy&paste problems of the game report window with the pbem playing participants of the list. It seemed that the automation part was highly requested. I suggest that there should be an option "copyLastPlayerActionsToClipboard" with the three possibilities: ASK, NEVER, ALWAYS with ASK as default. So after game save a pop-up would ask if last player actions should be copied to the clipboard. Players could then either turn it off or enable it in the configuration. This also solves the problem that this feature gets lost for new players. In the medium run if we define standard profiles for pbem/ftf the defaults could be set accordingly. Given Chris and Johns concerns maybe this should be a configuration option, that way it defaults to off (so people aren't unduly annoyed by it) but those who are happy to have it enabled can do so I'll work on a configuration wiki page to try and make some of this stuff clearer Phil On 31 Oct 2010, at 05:49, Chris Shaffer <chr...@gm...> wrote: > I concur with John. This idea scares me. Many people do multiple things with their PC during a game. The clipboard should only ever be changed by explicit command of the user. I suggest instead adding a "Copy" capability (menu selection or button) to the log window, preferably along with the ability to select part of the content for copying by clicking-and-dragging. |

Stefan, I agree with your approach. On a related note: I think that at some point we should bite the bullet and remove all code that only exists for backwards compatibility of saved files. Perhaps with version 1.5 (with a warning to the users). Before that, we should (or at least I should) update all my test saved files by loading and resaving. That should fix most incompatibilities, though perhaps not all of them. Erik. -----Original Message----- From: Stefan Frey [mailto:ste...@we...] Sent: Saturday 30 October 2010 14:32 To: Development list for Rails: an 18xx game Subject: Re: [Rails-devel] More changes Erik: I think I forgot to highlight some time ago my approach to skip actions, which are the only available. I implemented that for the startRound auctions. I have added a step in the GameManager process method: // only pass available => execute automatically if (!isGameOver() && possibleActions.containsOnlyPass()) { result = process(possibleActions.getList().get(0)); } I check if there is only only a pass action available, if so the pass action gets executed automatically. The advantage is that this keeps the legacy files 100% compatible with the new one and I do not have to check anytime creating actions if there is only a pass and then remove that action. At that time I considered adding that for the Done action, but I feared to many side effects. There are two possible extensions: Maybe there could be two types of Done actions (required/possible to skip) and/or a configuration option to automatically skip done actions or not (It might be surprising for newbies if the done is automatically done). Stefan, Thanks! I had noticed the not-so-logical BorderLayout positions, but it had not occurred to me that these could affect scrolling. Apparently the positions are not equal. This would allow to add a MessagePanel to the NORTH position to display help text and other messages at the top of the window, similar to the OR window. This should be tested a little if there are not unexpected side effects. Our integration tests currently does not cover the UI part. Erik: I gave it a try: Adding a JScrollPane wrapper for the GameStatus panel and moving that to the CENTER position in the BorderLayout and the ButtonPanel to the SOUTH position should fix that issue. This would allow to add a MessagePanel to the NORTH position to display help text and other messages at the top of the window, similar to the OR window. This should be tested a little if there are not unexpected side effects. Our integration tests currently does not cover the UI part. Phil: I agree that the current info text will most likely be ignored. Possible solutions: * Maybe it could be configured that it pops up once and then the user could check the option "do not show this message again". However this has to be stored in the configuration file and there is no requirement for one yet. In that case selecting the option would require the storage of a configuration file. * It could be shown in the comment part of the message pane. But it is only shown during the OR. See next mail on adding this to the status window. * The release note only help for current players, future players will not be covered. A wiki/faq page on pbem configuration would be great. Something I proposed to add some time ago: All messages of the activities of the last active player at the time of save get automatically copied to the system's clipboard. This should allow to past them into another application easily. Could anyone test this with on another system than Linux? I hope that it also works with those configuration that caused troubles at copying from the report window. I have added some hint text to the save game dialog to make users aware of that fact. A pop-up after the save, seemed a little intrusive. Stefan |

As far as I can test, the problem is now completely fixed. The root cause was a combination of - the need for the UI to access certain data that it must obtain via the GameManager (in this case: which private is blocking a hex), - the fairly new method to find the GameManager via getInstance(), which needs NDC.get() to return a value that must be separately initialized in each thread that might need the GM, - bypassing the normal setup window caused the UI event thread to incompletely initialised until some action (such as laying a tile) is performed. The UI classes now all use the GameUIManager to find the GM. The fact that map painting stopped where it did (at hex J12) was probably caused by an error in finding data relating to the blocked hex I13 (by the B&O private), which was painted just before J12. As always, the fix will be in the next release. I just reported this as bug 3096040. I'm playing 18EU and during the stock round, all 15 minor companies plus the major companies are listed in the stock market. When playing on my Mac laptop, the "done" button and the bottom 20% of the stock market window are unavailable, as they are off the bottom of the screen. Playing on my desktop with higher resolution does not, of course, encounter the same problem. It would help if the stock market window created vertical scroll bars when needed. -- Chris Please consider the environment before printing this e-mail. |

Indeed I can reproduce the half map when starting from the command line, although I don't see any exception. My guess is that some difference has crept in between the initialization sequences of RunGame.loadGame() and GameSetupWindow.loadAndStartGame(). (BTW I never use RunGame myself, and don't maintain it). I will try to have another look later this week. Excellent news, I've just run my test game through the latest build and both Eriks map edge fixes and the revenue calculation are working perfectly in my test scenarios (in fact in the revenue case it picked up several turns where we ended runs at small stations illegally! oops). After a very busy period the last few weeks (due to a move of the whole family), I will start coding/discussing again. As a start I finished the 1825 revenue calculation support: In addition to the modifiers that enable DoubleHeading and TerminatAtMajorOnly, there is another one that checks for ScoreTileOnlyOnce. To activate those they have to be defined in the RevenueManager section in game.xml. If I remember 1825 well enough, this supports the full ruleset of the revenue calculation in 1825. Stefan |

4. During Stock rounds, a player's Autopass will be reset each time that a share or certificate limit gets exceeded as a result of some action. I have only tested this for the case of a presidency change, but it should work in all cases. 5. In Operating rounds of games where companies can own their own shares, the Treasury share trading step will be skipped if nothing can be traded. In such cases, old saved files will have a mandatory 'Done' action. For backwards compatibility, this 'Done' action will be catched and skipped in such a case. I have tested the latter in a progressed 18EU game - I hope it will work in all cases. Erik. -----Original Message----- From: Erik Vos [mailto:eri...@xs...] Sent: Tuesday 12 October 2010 21:02 To: 'Development list for Rails: an 18xx game' Subject: More changes A few more changes: 1. Added reserved hexes facility, and applied to 18EU and 1825 maps. All this facility does is displaying the reserved-for company name in square brackets on the reserved hex (as long as no tiles are laid). Tile lays are not actually prevented. 2. Removed the "no train - no income" popup that annoys some people. 3. Allow >60% share ownership in certain cases, for the current Stock Round only. Applied to 18EU mergers. Bug #3065007 I cannot reproduce: "* If I start a company (purchase the president's share) and then Undo the act of forming it, the status window continues to show the company with the share price I set.
