This seems to be the first game with this particular map configuration, so I'm not surprised about finding bugs. I cannot load your saved file (not sure why), but in my own attempt to play it I found that tile #57 cannot be laid "in any valid orientation" on city hexes E11 and M7; I'll try to debug that. Please choose a different game name than 1830 - we already have such a game. I named it 18XX for my test. I cannot handle duplicate names. Erik. Yes, there are 2x2x2=8 possibilities to set up map orientation and map hexes naming! Erik. Thanks. I suppose that's not the problem unless there is something I'm still not understanding. I have attached the XML files (modified from 1830) and a save file if someone's willing to take a look. Note how the track is discontinuous in the northwest and lots of otherwise legal track upgrades are disallowed. I added the #441 single spoke city to help me troubleshoot the error. The tile upgrades seem to think that they are actually a space away (i.e. E11 only allows the upgrades that would be allowed in G11). I can't figure out the general rule for the error. I am totally stumped on this. I was thinking it was related to rotating the hexes, but now I'm not so sure. |

Have the 1889 tile upgrades been definitively fixed? If not, I can sit down with my physical tiles and update the XML file. The last I saw was that everything that looks like it *should* be upgradeable in fact is upgradeable, but I never saw that someone went through the process of working through this. |

I have committed code for this feature. There is a new "File | Reload" option in the game status window. Contrary to what I said below, it can only be used to load a *later* version of the same game, and it also lets you retry if you pick a saved file that does not match with the current game. It basically works for me, although error reporting may need some further polishing. To anyone interested: please give it a try. I will sent you what I have already done on Sunday or Monday (I am out of my home now without access to my changes). I suspended progressing with 18GA while trying to add suport for swamp and mountain symbols (I wnated to make the map look better). This issue got me deeply engaged so maybe indeed it would be better to have someone else carry on with 18GA. It's about how the hexes are named. "letterOrientation" defines whether the letters (A-Z) alongside the map run horizontally or vertically. "even" defines which letters have even numbers: A (i.e. A2, A4, B3, C4) or B (i.e. A1, A3, B2, C3 etc.) - in fact any letter can be used here. Yes, there are 2x2x2=8 possibilities to set up map orientation and map hexes naming! Erik. The map looks right, but I am running into problems when I try to lay tiles--lots of "no valid orientation" errors. My game has the NS tile orientation unlike the EW orientation in 1830. Things seem to play okay if I leave the orientation as EW in Map.xml although the map is rotated and the orientations of the special tiles are wrong. Instead of the first line of the 1830 Map.xml, I am using the one from 18AL which has the NS tile orientation. <Map mapClass="rails.ui.swing.hexmap.NSHexMap" tileOrientation="NS" letterOrientation="vertical" even="A"> What do the last two items in that line mean ("letterOrientation" and "even"). Or maybe more helpful for me--what is the short list of things to change when moving from the 1830 EW tile orientation to the NS orientation? Thanks. |

OK, this (what I would call) "Reload" feature sounds useful and pretty easy to do. The reloaded file must be an earlier or a later version of the same game, otherwise Rails will complain and throw you out. I'll put this high on my to-do list. I am modifying the 1830 xml files to put my prototype game into rails (and having a great time of it!), but have hit a snag. Thanks. |

i went through the same steps as you and got the same result. it looks to me like eclipse doesn't recognize "rails" as a JAVA project, so the run configuration screen doesn't list it. i was able to get it to work by cd'ing into rails, moving the 18xx directory up to my workspace, then creating a new java project from existing source called 18xx. the run configuration sees that just fine. john On Wed, Mar 2, 2011 at 1:21 PM, Justin Rebelo <jus...@gm...>wrote: > Hey guys. This is a little non-obvious. When you check out the project, you need to check out trunk, and not check out the whole repository (which includes all branches and tags). This will only check out a single 18xx directory, which has a working project file in it. Alternatively, you can right-click on trunk/18xx, select New->Java Project, uncheck Use Default Location, and select the $SVN_ROOT/trunk/18xx directory, and create yourself a new project that is at the correct directory level. This should allow you to run the new project as a Java Application. ---Brett. On Wed, Mar 2, 2011 at 10:21 AM, Justin Rebelo <jus...@gm...> wrote: > Hey guys. 14 minutes. That's how long it took after sending this long explanation for me to fix the problem on my own. =D I had dug around at the past threads on this subject prior and done lots of looking around at general eclipse help but the problem I was having here was a very small issue which was actually already solved for another user deep in a thread at the bottom of a message with inline comments, so I failed to pick up on it the first time. Basically, I needed to use a more specific checkout URL as was suggested by Erik Vos here: http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_id=26933215 So, I'm up and running now and thanks to Erik for the help he indirectly provided. :) On Wed, Mar 2, 2011 at 10:21 AM, Justin Rebelo <jus...@gm...> wrote: > Hey guys. Hey guys. I am attempting to get myself set up with a rails development environment with Eclipse. I'm not a java programmer, but I'm interested in having a the environment set up so I can experiment and learn a bit about both Java and rails (I'm a software developer already and the java language looks quite natural to me, I just don't know the libraries, etc). I believe I'm on the cusp of having this all going, thanks to a helpful overview courtesy of Phil Davies. I've come across a snag at what is surely the final step in the process and I'm going to give a very detailed account here of what I did to get to this point and hopefully some of you kind folks can spot what I've missed or done incorrectly. I know this isn't an eclipse support ML, but hopefully this is topical enough to be acceptable here (as I've heard other people mention a desire to try the same thing). Here's what I did and I've linked to screenshots along the way so you can see exactly what I saw. Operating System: Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit % java -version OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea6 1.9.7) (6b20-1.9.7-0ubuntu1) OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 19.0-b09, mixed mode) (Note that rails has run without issue for me using these versions for some time, so I am quite sure that the issue here is just an eclipse setup issue) 1. Installed Eclipse via apt-get. 2. Installed subversive and the ALL available connectors just to make sure I had it all licked: http://gotsignal.org/images/eclipse/1.png 3. File->New->Other->SVN->Project from SVN http://gotsignal.org/images/eclipse/2.png 4. Specified project name 'rails' and using HEAD rev: http://gotsignal.org/images/eclipse/3.png 5. Checked out source (no problems) http://gotsignal.org/images/eclipse/4.png (verification: http://gotsignal.org/images/eclipse/5.png ) 6. Set up run configuration (this is where I fall off the rails....as it were): Disregard the odd visual artifact, it's from the screenshot app. I chose the project name I specified when I created the project: 'rails' and the correct main class: http://gotsignal.org/images/eclipse/6.png 7. Attempt to run results in error: unable to find project http://gotsignal.org/images/eclipse/8.png I go back into the run configuration screen and, next to the project name field, I clicked on the Browse button and get this: http://gotsignal.org/images/eclipse/7.png (no projects listed, as though eclipse doesn't see the project I created) Phil suggested it could be a casing issue, so I tried using run configuration with project name "Rails" and got the same error. http://gotsignal.org/images/eclipse/10.png Just to confirm, I right clicked on the project in the package explorer and selected properties and you can see the window here: http://gotsignal.org/images/eclipse/9.png The window title suggests that the project is in fact called 'rails'. The only thing I can venture is that, for some reason, Eclipse isn't recognizing this "Project from SVN" as being a project at all. Any ideas, folks? If any more info is needed, just shoot and I'll provide all I can. Thanks in advance. Justin |

In part such an ability would potentially bring around the long desired 'network play'. I can foresee more-or-less automated play that involves the program itself automatically dropping off and retrieving files from a place like 'dropbox'. Of course this ability would require yet more coding! Wish I knew Java or had enough time to learn it. Alas my day job interferes and my night life (e.g., the family) keeps me occupied. Rick, Your request is quite sensible, and I fully sympathize with it (and it *has* been requested before), but unfortunately it is hard to achieve in Rails as it is. When (re)playing a game, Rails creates a lot of objects in memory, and currently there is no easy way to clean that up. Starting another game in the same Rails run is not far from being achievable, but the memory space of the old game would be wasted. Thinking about it, what might be doable without too much effort is to enable loading a saved file that represents a later stage in the *same* game. Rails could do a check of the actions in the saved game against the actions currently in memory, and get on as long as these are identical, finally picking up any extra actions in the saved game file. If I understand you correctly, that would help you out in the case you describe, right? Erik. > -----Oorspronkelijk bericht----- > Van: Rick Westerman [mailto:wes...@pu...] > Verzonden: dinsdag 1 maart 2011 14:19 > Aan: Development List Rails > Onderwerp: [Rails-devel] No close/load ability? > > Hello list: > > I am back looking and using Rails after a year or so hiatus. This has been mentioned recently. Currently, you're correct that you have to close and re-open rails to load a different save file. I can definitely appreciate the use case to justify adding the ability to load directly, but if I was a rails developer it would likely be quite low on my list of priorities since closing and re-opening is quite trivial. It's quite possible someone's already working on this feature anyway, perhaps this thread will prompt more discussion. Hello list: I am back looking and using Rails after a year or so hiatus. One feature I find missing (and that I find strange that no one has made a feature request for) is the ability to close the current game and open up another game without having to quit and restart Rails. So I am wondering if I am missing something obvious. Is there a way to load in a game without having to quit Rails? What is really bring this to the fore for me is that a buddy and I are playing two-player 1889 via putting our files into Dropbox. When we are both on line then we can get a bunch of moves done but are having to quit Rails between moves. In other words I find myself doing: 1) Start Rails 2) Load in the current game file, do my move, save the file. 3) See via Dropbox that my buddy has done his move. 4) Quit Rails. Repeat starting from #1. What would be preferable is: 1) Start Rails 2) Load, do move, save as in #2 above. 3) See my buddy do his move. 4) Repeat starting with #2; i.e., no quit/start of Rails Thanks, -- Rick Westerman wes...@pu... |

Thanks! I had overlooked this case. The patch has been applied. Hey all, Fix for the bug that allows the CGR to buy a 4 train from another corporation. The setBuyableTrains action that checks for trains available in other corps isn't overridden in 1856 specific code so there was no check for whether or not the CGR was allowed to purchase the train type. This should be a fix that applies going forward to any game that has restrictions on corporation purchases by train type Phil |

Just to confirm that Aliza's mentioned scenario works fine, the logic for noting that the CGR has or has not acquired a permanent train works even if it disposes of it later. I'm pretty sure that all works fine although I'll run up a test case to check it. The whole process around 'has CGR acquired a permanent train or not' seems fairly solid, the bit that was missing was the behaviour if it inherits a 4 that hangs around long enough for the CGR to run it.
