Try doing the same thing with xawtv 
...taking a snapshot that is, and see if it does the same thing happens.
If it does it will be driver related. gqcam does have a few bugs.

xawtv does work better than gqcam and comes with a program webcam which
will
ftp pictures to a website for you.
