I am trying to use the functionality of the Assessibility functions revolving around AXUIElement. I have not been able to find this in the pyobjc libraries ... does it exist? Is there some other way to extract information about widgets using pyobjc? __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! If you're used to using pdb, you can set a trace point, and then start the application from Terminal like so: ~/Applications zbir@gorilla $ ./ZopeEditManager.app/Contents/MacOS/ZopeEditManager That will keep the app running in the current tty and let you attach to the running instance when it gets to your trace. That's how I do it, anyway, but I'm a sucker for `import pdb; pdb.set_trace()` - I do it all day, every day, with Zope[1]. Zac [1] Especially in Xemacs shell-mode with a decent python-mode.el - then you get to step through with code tracking in a separate buffer... |

Hello, Usually, when I want to debug a Python application, I use JEdit or PyOxyd. But for this I need to start the Python script from the application (JEdit or PyOxyd). How can I do this with a PyObj application? Is there another way to start the debugger? Regards. --------------------- Pierre |

I'm thinking of converting a OpenGL application from pure python (via PyOpenGL/GLUT) to pyobjc using Cocoa. For my first step in learning, I would like to make the OpenGLDemo example into an application that can be distributed. (Panther only.) I have been unable to come up with a combination of arguments to build a "semi-standalone" version of OpenGLDemo that works. (It won't even run locally, let alone on another machine.) I understand that I will want PyOpenGL bundled with the application, as it can't be expected on target machines. Has anybody built a semi-standalone version of OpenGLDemo? I'm using pyobjc 1.1. --Scott |

Bugs item #981580, was opened at 2004-06-28 15:23 Message generated for change (Tracker Item Submitted) made by Item Submitter You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=114534&aid=981580&group_id=14534 Category: None Group: None Status: Open Resolution: None Priority: 5 Submitted By: s.denning (sdenning) Assigned to: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Summary: Tutorial trouble Initial Comment: I realize that tutorial maintenance is probably not real high on the priority list but can someone give me pointers to get beyond the parts I'm having trouble with? Specifically, the PyObjC files are not installed in /Library/ Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/Current/lib/python2.3 but appear to be in /Library/Python/2.3. For step 6 bundlbuilder.py doesn't appear to be included. Maybe it isn't necessary anymore, but what should I do instead? This is as far as I've gotten so far. Thanks, ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=114534&aid=981580&group_id=14534 |

I'll only plug this once, but one of the things I've been working on for a while now is talking panda ( http://talkingpanda.com/ ), a set of foreign language phrase books for the version 2 and later firmware iPods (anything with buttons above the wheel, including the Mini). There's a flash demonstration and an iPod-installable Japanese demo up on the site (see the right sidebar) if you want to play before you pay :) The installer is written in about 95% PyObjC, with the rest in ObjC and C. I used the Xcode template to develop it. I did not use Cocoa Bindings as I wanted OS X 10.2 support. I had to do several things in PyObjC that I had not done before, such as creating a NSMatrix subclass, and doing AppleEvents asynchronously (via the low level interface of an unreleased copy of aeve I have). For OS X 10.2 support, I did it all by hand. I had my working application for 10.3, then I had it print all of the keys and values from sys.modules where the value had a sensible __file__. I then went to an OS X 10.2 machine and installed Python (from the MacPython page) and compiled the relevant packages (PyObjC, LaunchServices, TECManager). I then used this dependency list to strip down the framework to the bare essentials, and I used: find . -name "*.so" -exec install_name_tool -change /Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.3/Python @executable_path/../Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.3/Python {} \; to rewrite the mach-o load commands (as well as install_name_tool -id @exec... on the Python dylib, of course). then I brought this all into my Xcode project and made a copy files build phase for the framework. I had to change main.m to inject the PYTHONHOME environment variable to [NSString stringWithFormat:@"%@/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.3", [[NSBundle mainBundle] bundlePath] (written in Mail, selectors may be wrong.. I did something slightly different in the code) so that Python could find its standard library. I did notice one bug, AppHelper.runEventLoop() seems to crash if installMachInterrupt=True (the default) with a 10.2 PyObjC. I haven't researched the issue, I simply made it false because I didn't need that functionality (it's basically to trap SIGINT) since the app was otherwise ready. Developing this installer application gave me several ideas for new tools, libraries, and tutorials to write. One of which is ripping bundlebuilder apart into tiny little orthogonal bits, and another is making a bdist_pkg for distutils (that PackageManager should use in lieu of tarballs). I'm also thinking that I should put some more work into aeve, because it's much better suited for *receiving* and *sending* apple events than appscript is, although it is pretty low level right now (but FAR FAR nicer than working with AEDesc myself) it worked out well for me with no surprises. -bob |

No, it is currently unsupported and very difficult to build an application on Panther that works on Jaguar. It's much easier to have a Jaguar machine around and just build the release version from there. The build process for Python and PyObjC does not currently support the SDKs or MACOSX_DEPLOYMENT_TARGET very well. -bob |

Unfortunately, the Python builds shipped with Panther and Jaguar are incompatible. The Jaguar build is statically linked while the Panther build supports proper modules, etc. If you don't mind paying the price of a couple of additional megs in the app wrapper, bundling a Python build in your app is likely the best way to go. The other issue is one of symbols. There are some symbols on Panther that are not found in the Jaguar frameworks. This will be problematic. You should be able to build PyObjC on Jaguar and have it "just work" on Panther (I believe-- I honestly haven't tested it), but not the other way around. Given the size of PyObjC, shipping a build of PyObjC for each target operating system shouldn't be too onerous. At some point, PyObjC should probably start leveraging the multi-platform SDK support that ships with Panther. b.bum |

Hi, We have an app we've been developing under Panther with PyObjC 1.1. I know that there are different version of PyObjC for Jaguar and Panther, but those difference only for developers, or will a PyObjC app built using the Panther version be unstable or unusuble under panther? I keep my spam filter for mailing lists set to the most lenient setting because I trust all of the list managers to do a reasonable job managing their lists. This mailing list is the only one I subscribe to that has serious spam problems (looks like about a 10:1 non-spam to spam ratio). At the very least non-subscribers should be banned from posting (if they haven't been already). Jon. Yeah, the only spam I see from this list post-filters is the one to three russian mails a day. Annoying, but not annoying enough.. -bob |

It should be mostly the same as you would do it from Objective C. I'm not sure if anyone has really tried it though, let us know how it works out. I can confirm that the low level stuff does work, by that I mean (which I use to handle outgoing apple events asynchronously): def applicationDidFinishLaunching_(self, aNotification): NSAppleEventManager.sharedAppleEventManager().setEventHandler_andSelecto r_forEventClass_andEventID_( self, 'handleAppleEvent:withReplyEvent:', struct.unpack('>i', 'aevt')[0], struct.unpack('>i', 'ansr')[0]) def handleAppleEvent_withReplyEvent_(self, event, replyEvent): pass handleAppleEvent_withReplyEvent_ = objc.selector(handleAppleEvent_withReplyEvent_, signature='v@:@@') The caveat is that four character codes look like unsigned integers through the bridge, so you'll probably have to do a fair amount of struct.pack/unpack as demonstrated above. Also note that Python's Carbon AEDesc is bridged to -[NSAppleEventDescriptor aeDesc], so if you want to work with an AEDesc directly (process it with aeve or the like) then you should be able to just go at it. -bob |
