Hi,

While using Putty-nd (8.4.0.0 latest version), I came across the following sizing behavior which I am not sure if it is expected, a limitation, a defect, or a potential configuration option.
It is very easy to reproduce.

  1. Create a simple text file containing some large text (test) on a unix server.
  2. I used grep in this case to search for the string "test" inside this file. -> screenshotsizingissue1.png
  3. Resize Putty ND to make the width decrease. -> screenshotsizingissue2.png
  4. Run the same command.
  5. It can be seen that the secondary result is not sized again. -> screenshotsizingissue3.png

I am on Windows 11, 24H2, latest build. 1440p. (2560x1440p).

The same works with Gitbash for example, the result is resized automatically while the width changes.
I also encountered the same issue with mobaxterm, so this might be a limitation with this particular UI.

Regards,
Zoltan Vigh

I also tested this on the Mac Terminal, and there the resizing also works in that case, so expecting this to be related to the Terminal UI environment, putty has, but I am not fully sure. If needed, I can also video-record the behavior on Windows.
Checked some configuration options in Terminal - Features and Window - Appearance and so on, but couldn't get this one to work. If I should change any configuration that should fix this, let me know and I will try it out.

    Hi there,

    Thanks for the report.

I know this issue actually. Sorry to say that.
I think it was designed like this as in putty.
I have the same habit with you. So I tried to change it but gave up before it was completed. It took too much time and it is hard to maintain those changes when syncing with the putty.
The root cause lies in that the original info is dropped after the term lines are built. It makes it hard to rebuild the term lines after the resized.
So it is not in the plan as far as I can see.

    Hi LuDong,

Thanks for the response. I was expecting it is a limitation. The workaround is to use the clear command to clear the screen beforehand, which is not a problem.

Do you think it is worth trying to report this for the vanilla PuTTY developer team? If they could enhance this and If they did, would that help you out with your PuTTY variant?

I assume you aren't part of the Vanilla PuTTY team.
Do you know potentially how to report this issue for them or how do you contact them? I can give it a try if you think this could help you with PuTTY-nd.

I found this and there is an email address which I thought I would write to.

Decided to ultimately report this to the original team as well.

    Hi LuDong,

The PuTTY team answered, you can close this ticket out, because this is Working As Designed, limitation, or working as expected pretty much.

It's a good job you sent the screenshots, because that wasn't clear at
all from your description. I think what you mean is: text that was
wrapped to one screen width is not rewrapped to the new width when you
    resize the screen.

That is true, but it isn't a bug. Terminals differ in how they handle
this kind of thing, and there's no specification saying who's right and
    who's wrong.
