Sorry.  I couldn't think of anything to help you track down this problem.
Congratulations on finding it though!

Actually I could reproduce the problem with your code: just stick it in a
function with all the varables as parameters, and turning the optimizer on
will cause the problem.

Use `asm volatile'.
