We will look at how these "rights" (quotations very much intended) relate to software which has unique characteristics not found in other technologies. Finally we will look at Free Software and Open Source (what these terms mean, and how they relate to copyrights and patents). No prior knowledge of either copyright/patent law or technical computer knowledge is required other than a basic knowledge of what computer programming is about (e.g. the relation of source and object code). In fact a lot of what you think you know about copyrights etc is probably wrong anyway :-). Dear Programming Team, I am in the process of moving this list serv to a real NYU one, so if you are getting unwanted emails, please ignore them for just a few more days. Please don't forget that the NYU ACM chapter and we are hosting an information session at 6:30 tomorrow (Thursday 9-15) in Warren Weaver Hall, room 1314. In addition to giving a general overview of the competition I'd like to use that time to agree on regular semiweekly meeting times and days, so it'd be great if as many people as possible from last year's team showed up as well as any interested new people you know. -Chris |

This is last year's Intercollegiate Programming Competition listserv. Please disregard this message if you have since graduated or become uninterested. For the rest of you, I haven't yet heard anything about ICPC meetings this year, and as it is the first day of classes I think we should start organizing. The location and date have not yet been decided for this years tournament, but you can still find some very vague information here: http://www.acmgnyr.org/#year2005 I think that we should plan to have an informational meeting late next week and then start our usual biweekly meetings following that. I volunteer to put fliers up in CIWW and talk to Ms. Zonis to send out a departmental email, but first I'd like to find out when interested people from last years teams are available. Hi all! You may find some useful materials in http://www2.ee.ntu.edu.tw/~b87144/ICPC/ICPC.htm include a powerpoint and some problems I designed and provided for selceting representative of my undergrad university last year. Most of them have solution using interesting algorithm. If you really tried it, I can provide judge's input and output. (Oh, I was the judge for that competition :) ) The algorithm I used in "G - To the Max" is an O(n^3) one, the code is not complicated, but could have a shorter one if using O(n^4) method. The competition is just around the corner -- Sunday, November 14th. Its time to get serious!! Tomorrow's meeting will be held at 5:00 in Prof. Dewar's apartment (73 Fifth Ave - Apr 11B). I will be there as soon as I finish my 5:00 - 6:00 office hours. At the end of the meeting we will select the teams. If you cannot make the meeting, you MUST send me an email confirming your intention to participate in the competition (inclusion in the list below is NOT sufficient documentation to be placed on a team -- I am unsure that every person on the list still intends to compete). We have registered five teams. It would be great to bring an alternate as well. Once teams are selected, each team is expected to hold a few practice sessions on their own. Remember there are only 17 days left. There are only four group meetings remaining (10-28, (Note: no meeting on 11-2), 11-4, 11-9 and 11-11 ). All will be held at 5:00 in Professor Dewar's apartment (73 Fifth - Apt 11B).
