I guess the best option at this point is a pragmatic one: Stay with the
xpdf code (maybe in the poppler form), but don't fix oneself to it too
much.  And we Debian guys will continue to use our poppler patch (which
is rather crude and non-autoconf'able).  I'll discuss this with Martin.
