Do not select the PLD_jpgqt driver unless you have the QT SDK installed and plan to use QT to develop for plplot. Same goes for FreeType, antigrain, wxWidgets, and a few other libraries. If you don't have these libraries, do not select them. You are also missing a couple steps in your list. Step 5a) Look for any items marked in red in the CMAKE window. If any items are marked in red, it means that you are either missing some components needed for the build you've selected, such as wxWidgets, QT, FreeType, etc..or that you've chosen some build options that conflict with one another. Step 5b) Resolve the options in red by either adding missing libraries and their respective paths and pressing configure again. Or resolve them by removing check marks for conflicting build options and pressing configure. Continue 5a and 5b until all the red lines are gone. Set 5c) After you've performed steps 5a and 5b and there are no more red items, then click Generate, allow CMAKE to create the new VS solution file and then open it in VS and run it per Step 7. After running the "build_all solution", you won't see anything special and the jpeg driver will be added to the plplot DLL or the static plplot link-time lib file. Once your examples are properly compiled and linked, the driver is embedded in the exe itself, so you won't see a separate or discrete jpeg driver-file or any other type of driver file. Upon running your exe, if everything worked properly, you should see "jpeg" listed as an output option when you run the example. Below is a text grab of Example X01c from my system set to use postscript, wxWidgets, SVG and DXF driver output. Your examples, based on selecting PLD_jpeg should show at least the jpeg file driver if the build went properly. c:\build-plplot\examples\c\release\x01c.exe [Enter] PLplot library version: 5.9.10 Plotting Options: < 1> ps PostScript File (monochrome) < 2> psc PostScript File (color) < 3> wxwidgets wxWidgets DC < 4> svg Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG 1.1) < 5> dxf AutoCAD 2D DXF File Enter device number or keyword: Hope this helps. ________________________________ From: "Lampman, Adam J" <ajl...@ba...> To: "plp...@li..." <plp...@li...> Sent: Thursday, October 17, 2013 9:29 AM Subject: Re: [Plplot-general] Device selection problems I tried, but it doesn't seem to be working. Here's what I did: 1. Open CMake 2.8.11.2 GUI. 2. Select source and build directories (source is freshly updated from PLPlot's SVN trunk). 3. Click "Configure." 4. Select "Microsoft Visual Studio 11" from the drop-down tab, then hit Ok. 5. Once CMake generates the files, scroll down to PLD_jpeg and check its box (as well as PLD_jpgqt for good measure). 6. Click "Generate." 7. Go to the build directory, open plplot.sln, right-click "ALL_BUILD" and tell it to build. After I did that, I searched the file for "jpg." The only things that showed up were cmake files, which aren't what I'm looking for, correct? I also did a search for "driver" and none of them had to do with jpegs, from what I could tell. I looked in the lib, dll, and driver folders and didn't see anything mentioned jpegs either. I also tried running my program again and got the same error as before. I’m completely new to PLplot. I’ve been trying to get it working for a while now, but I keep having problems with it. My goal is to use it to create plots in jpeg format. I’m not looking for interactive plots, a user interface, command line args, or anything fancy. I’m using Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 and I’m writing the code in C++. I’ve copied the x00 C++ example from the PLplot Examples page (nearly) word for word, and this is the output I get: *** PLPLOT WARNING *** Unable to open cmap0 file cmap0_default.pal *** PLPLOT WARNING *** Unable to open cmap0 file cmap0_default.pal *** PLPLOT WARNING *** Unable to open cmap1 .pal file cmap1_default.pal *** PLPLOT ERROR, ABORTING OPERATION *** plInitDispatchTable: Could not open drivers directory, aborting operation Plotting Options: Enter device number or keyword (stream 1): According to the documentation I’ve seen, it should be listing output options for me. Of course, the fact it can’t find the drivers directory may have something to do with that. I’ve tried putting in “JPEG” and many other keywords I’ve seen ,but nothing works. What do I need to do to get this to output jpegs? Do I need some sort of special jpeg driver? Thanks! Hi Hubin, my mistake: "Visual Studio 9 2008" is still a valid generator name, but the naming scheme has changed with the newer version of VS: "Visual Studio 10", "Visual Studio 10 IA64", ... indicate the processor architecture as the last component in the name. So the Wiki page does not need adjusting. Regards, Arjen From: Arjen Markus [mailto:Arj...@de...] Sent: Thursday, October 17, 2013 1:19 PM To: hubin; plp...@li... Hi Hubin, I think the generator "Visual Studio 10 2010" has been changed in recent versions of CMake to "Visual Studio 10". (I found the generator "Visual Studio 9 2008" in one of my batch files, so at some point that must have been valid.) Anyway we will change the example in the Wiki. Thanks for reporting that. On the other hand, your report about your success surprises me a bit: the two command-lines look identical. It is rather strange that you should run CMake twice in succession. Hello Hubin, the proper name for the generator is "Visual Studio 10". You need to run CMake with the MS Visual Studio environment correctly set up. That is: select the MS Visual Studio Command Prompt from the Start menu, go to the correct directory and then run the CMake command. Oh, and when you used CMAKE to initiate the building of plplot, did you make sure that you put checkmark in the box for PLD_jpeg? That tells CMAKE to add JPEG drivers to your lib/dll. ________________________________ From: "Ferrell, Stephen" <sfe...@ya...> To: "Lampman, Adam J" <ajl...@ba...>; "plp...@li..." <plp...@li...> Sent: Wednesday, October 16, 2013 4:38 PM Subject: Re: [Plplot-general] Device selection problems The initial 3 errors are due to your program looking for color palette files that it requires and not finding them. One thing I noticed is that at http://sourceforge.net/projects/plplot/files/plplot/ there is still, near the top of the page, the text and link: "Looking for the latest version? Download plplot-5.9.9.tar.gz (13.8 MB)" If the link is followed, one is then invited to download plplot-5.9.9.tar.gz. Perhaps this will automatically self-correct, given time ... or perhaps it calls for some human intervention ;-) Cheers, Rob |

I am pleased to report on behalf of the PLplot developers that PLplot-5.9.10 is now available for you to download, build, and test. For details of this latest release, please follow the links in http://sourceforge.net/p/plplot/news/2013/10/plplot-release-5910/ The README.release and ChangeLog.release files in plplot-5.9.10.tar.gz are of particular interest. Note, especially the backwards incompatible changes in the API for this release due to changing all line width arguments from integer to floating point values. As a result of our extensive testing of this release on a wide variety of platforms (including several Linux variants, Mac OS X, and several Windows variants including MinGW/MSYS, Cygwin, and MSVC/IFORT) we believe errors in this release are minimized, but, as always, we welcome your feedback if you find any issues. If you download both plplot-5.9.10.tar.gz.asc and plplot-5.9.10.tar.gz you can run "gpg --verify plplot-5.9.10.tar.gz.asc" to verify that Alan W. Please also take a look at plplot.sf.net which has been substantially updated as part of this release process. Previously broken links have been fixed, and the documentation (now including details of the new pllegend and plcolorbar capabilities and many other fixes) has been updated. Have fun with this new version of PLplot! Alan __________________________ Alan W. I plan to release PLplot-5.9.10 in 5 days time on September 28th to make the large amount of work we have put into PLplot for the last two years more readily available to our users. The PLplot core developers are still working on one last issue (propagating plcolorbar changes to the Ada, D, and OCaml bindings and examples). For the rest of you, today and possibly tomorrow (but not later this week) is your last chance to get any simple, non-intrusive fixes into this release. So please take this opportunity to send us (on the plplot-devel mailing list) any of your simple PLplot patches (whether old patches which you would like to draw to our attention again or new patches). Also, please take this opportunity to try out the PLplot svn trunk version (using the new Allura location, http://svn.code.sf.net/p/plplot/code/trunk, which is what is going to turn into 5.9.10) and report those bugs either to the plplot-devel mailing list or the bug tracker. If you can do without the cairo devices then a better alternative to 1) is 3) Use the -DDEFAULT_NO_CAIRO_DEVICES=ON cmake option to turn off the attempt to build the cairo devices. On the other hand, if you want to use our cairo devices (which along with our qt devices are pretty much the best of our devices) then a comment on option 2) is virtually any modern Linux distribution should satisfy the PLplot cairo needs except for the "enterprise" distros. And even in the "enterprise" distro case, it is possible the latest version of those might include the required cairo version, but you will have to check that for yourself. If you absolutely must stick with your current "enterprise" distro version, but you also really need our cairo device driver, then another alternative is 4) build a modern set of pango/cairo libraries and all their dependencies for yourself. I am currently in the middle of developing a largely independent project to automate such builds (see cmake/build_projects), but that is an experimental project whose current development has been largely suspended until after our forthcoming release on September 28th because that release process is going to consume quite a bit of my time. That said, I have gotten that build to work on Debian so it might also work on CentOS, but there are definitely no guarantees. Furthermore, if you try build_projects and it does not work for you, then you will likely have to wait until after the release to get any help from me concerning build_projects. pango_layout_get_baseline was not introduced until 1.22 ( https://developer.gnome.org/pango/stable/pango-Layout-Objects.html#pango-layout-get-baseline). Centos, being an "enterprise" distro (based of RHEL), does not have up-to-date versions of fast changing libraries. I suspect your options are: 1) Try an older version of plplot 2) Use a more "cutting edge" distro. There seems to be some linking issue with Pango that I cannot fathom. The result of 'make': Linking C executable plserver ../../src/libplplotd.so.11.0.0: undefined reference to `pango_layout_get_baseline' collect2: ld returned 1 exit status make[2]: *** [bindings/tk/plserver] Error 1 make[1]: *** [bindings/tk/CMakeFiles/plserver.dir/all] Error 2 make: *** [all] Error 2 % rpm --query pango pango-1.14.9-8.el5.centos pango-1.14.9-8.el5.centos % rpm --query cairo cairo-1.2.4-5.el5 cairo-1.2.4-5.el5 This is CentOS 5.5. Arjen: Thanks a lot. I do not know with what program to use to run "make install". Can you explain it? Also, on what directory do I run "make install". There in my case, an original un-zipped directory tree, c:plplot/ from which the second c:/build-plplot directory is created. This directory was correctly created and contains in, c:\build-plplot\examples\c\Debug\, the x01c.exe through x34c.exe files which will execute. Then, there is a third directory, my example directory for separate compilation, c:\plplot-Inverarity3d\, which has the code and its separate build file which cmake creates, c:\build-Inver\ etc. which contains the debug directory. I do not know where is the "make install" command or on exactly what tree it should be operated on. Also, is it possible to ask through a combination of Cmake and the makefile, to have the executable use the working directory of the executable file, or the current directory etc. so that the *.dll files could be put in one directory with the executable files; without reinstalling. I would like to have another file call the PLPLOT executable code in a file folder somewhere else; this would help with installation elsewhere. Kouros K. Arjen or Alan: I got the file to compile. I noted it in a separate email to the general list. My file compiles and will execute except, in the console that is in the execution, I get the following error: ****** PlPlot error: Aborting operation **** plInitDispatchTable: could not open drivers directory, aborting operation My file is actually example x11c with the text of the title of the graph altered so that it can be run as a sample to work out all of the compiling and linking issues. In actuality, the renamed example will work if I place it in the following directory: C:\build-plplot\examples\c\Debug\. It executes then -- without the plInitDisaptch etc. error. Also, I tried copying all the executables of the examples in c (x01c.exe through x34c.exe) and placing them in a separate test directory, and I got the same error with the PlInitDispatchTAble: could not open drivers directory, etc. To be able to operate my eventual compiled files and the executables, I need to be able to install them in an arbitrarily named directory etc. Can someone help me find what to change to get rid of the "plInitDispatchTable: could not open drivers directory" error?
