As an experiment I tried the following:

irwin@raven> strip -o /tmp/gui.so ~software/qtsdk-2009.02/qt/lib/libQtGui.so.4.5.1 
irwin@raven> ls -lh /tmp/gui.so ~software/qtsdk-2009.02/qt/lib/libQtGui.so.4.5.1
-rwxr-xr-x 1 software software 95M 2009-04-23 09:34 /home/software/qtsdk-2009.02/qt/lib/libQtGui.so.4.5.1*
-rw-r--r-- 1 irwin    irwin    11M 2009-07-25 19:13 /tmp/gui.so

That certainly solves the size disparity mystery, but I am amazed that
stripping makes that much of a difference.  Live and learn.
