I just tried under Cygwin:
With a fresh CVS checkout from 17:00 GMT I got a very similar situation:
- gfortran and g77 are found
- F77 is set to g77
- FC is set to gfortran
but F77 is used in the Makefiles to build the Fortran bindings and examples

I will proceed now with the most modest modifications to the F77 examples
(only introducing the plplot module and the kind PLFLT)
