I thought that your problem is that the models are not found. When the
gazeborc file is not found, Gazebo tries to load them from
/usr/local/share/gazebo/... If you compile but don't install, without a
customized gazeborc you may have that problem.
What world file are you using? simpleShapes should be the lest problematic.
