Hi Tom, There seems to be some extensions that the ATI driver for linux do not support (on that generation at least). I've been using gazebo on my final year project too, creating the PeopleBot model and i was getting lots of grief from my ATI enabled laptop. There is a nice document over here: http://playerstage.sourceforge.net/doc/Gazebo-manual-cvs-html/ga= zebo_opengl.html explaining what is what. My suggestion is to get an nvidia card if possible, else wait for the new release with the new rendering engine as Nate mentioned.
