I've never been happy with the word 'diff' because it's a Unix tool, and about 0.000001% of the world's population knows that. For the common user the word has no meaning. But I've yet to think of a suitable replacement. The word is nice and small. 'CompareToPreviousVersion' is too clunky. Still, I suppose meaning over brevity should be the rule. What's the literal translation of Vergleichen? ~swain On Thu, 27 Dec 2001, Carsten Klapp wrote: > > Thanks Reini, > > I appreciate this great feedback because my German grammar and vocabulary > is a little weak, especially when it comes to computers. "Diff" is an established term, but "Versionen" or "Revisionen" could go also. I also saw "Archiv" once. I would vote for "Diff". -- Reini Urban http://xarch.tu-graz.ac.at/home/rurban/ |

Thanks Reini, I appreciate this great feedback because my German grammar and = vocabulary=20 is a little weak, especially when it comes to computers. (Hah, I was=20 surprised the first time I read about "Speicher" in a German computer=20 magazine.) I have no problems with your alterations. I have some time now to make = the=20 changes, or you could do them yourself. The Anmelden/Ausmelden I had borrowed from yahoo.de. I've also seen the=20= word 'Link' und 'Links' elsewhere on the Internet used untranslated, and=20= also if there already is a WikiPrecedent (so to speak) for leaving=20 BackLinks untranslated then I agree, let's stick with that. How do you feel about using Vergleichen for diff? This one I really = wasn't=20 sure whether to translate, and then I thought of "=C4pfel mit Birnen=20 vergleichen". The abbreviated form (vgl.) also seems a little strange to=20= me, but it is the correct abbreviated form according to=20 <http://dict.leo.org>. (Also of interest, apparently operating systems like Mac and Windows = each=20 use different German words for things like buttons, checkboxes etc. but = I=20 don't know any specific examples.) First the words, second the words should be apparent phpwiki pages. This should be left untranslated imho. See the german DseWiki http://www.wikiservice.at/dse/wiki.cgi?BackLinkFunktion which also left it untranslated. Hi, I've just completed a major rewrite of the locale/README. One part in particular I would like some feedback on is the note about formal vs. informal language, because we have a new volunteer who offered to start some French translation. Also this part only represents my personal view about translating PhpWiki so it should be edited or expanded to include your views too. Here is the text. (For follow-up discussion I suggest to use a page on the SF phpwiki). Carsten Formalities =========== The modern English language has no clear rules for differentiating between the formal and informal use of the spoken word. This both simplifies and complicates matters for translators, as many languages do still make such a distinction. For the most part, PhpWiki is written using the casual forms of messages and explanatory text--after all the WikiWikiWeb is an open and friendly place. :-) However, there is no reason why translations of Wiki commands like "Edit" or "FindPages" should not be written formally. For the sake of recognition or clarity when the word function is the same as another common computer term or menu-item, if you feel it would be more effective to employ a formal variation then please do so. When the formal word is significantly longer than the informal word, make a judgment call or substitute an abbreviation, provided that it will be easily recognized. Remember that a good and thorough translation is a subjective and collective process. Once people have had a chance to test-drive your newly-translated PhpWiki there will always be suggestions for reshaping and improving it. Diversity and Change are part of WikiEssence. By all means don't belabour the translation process, and have some fun! |

I added patches from the SF site #496662, 496654, 496158 into PhpWiki so they can be closed off. (I updated the requests with some notes for each but can't close them myself). Carsten |

Hi, The new developmental version 1.3 has a plugin feature which makes it easier to add in extra modules. There isn't any specific "Category" feature yet that I am aware of but this can be accomplished by adding key words to the bottom of the page. For an example, click the category name at the bottom of the page in <http: //phpwiki.sourceforge.net/phpwiki/RandomPage>, it takes you to the category description page. Edit the category page "CategoryNextWikiSuggestions" to see how it works: each category page calls the plugin like this: <?plugin BackLinks page=[pagename] noheader=1?> Does your enhancement handle categories similar to the above example or is it something different? :-) Carsten On Wednesday, December 26, 2001, at 02:38 pm, Kishore Balakrishnan wrote: > Seasons Greetings, > > I downloaded phpWiki about 6 months ago and have tweaked it by > > 1) making the pages editable only by me... > > I would be glad to allow any of you to try it on request... > > 2) importantly: including a new field : categories to the pages... > > and adding 2 features > > a) All the related pages ( pages with same categories ) are > listed on the right of the individual pages > > e.g., http://www.carnatic.com/karmasaya/index.php?Steve%20Wainstead > > b) a new page which will only list pages of a particular category > > ( this link is available at the end of all pages... ) > > e.g., http://www.carnatic.com/karmasaya/index.php?category=Article > > ( all the articles i like on the web ) > > I am very happy with the result... Seasons Greetings, I downloaded phpWiki about 6 months ago and have tweaked it by 1) making the pages editable only by me... I would be glad to allow any of you to try it on request... 2) importantly: including a new field : categories to the pages... and adding 2 features a) All the related pages ( pages with same categories ) are listed on the right of the individual pages e.g., http://www.carnatic.com/karmasaya/index.php?Steve%20Wainstead b) a new page which will only list pages of a particular category ( this link is available at the end of all pages... ) e.g., http://www.carnatic.com/karmasaya/index.php?category=Article ( all the articles i like on the web ) I am very happy with the result... I still want to implement hierarchical categories. Please see http://www.carnatic.com/karmasaya/ I would like to know if this feature is being planned... -- http://phpwiki.sourceforge.net/phpwiki/LikePages is similar... But, my requirement is that user can specify clearly what is the category/keyword instead of using the same titles... Best Regards, Kishore. -- http://www.carnatic.com |

I like the tests and enhanced the perl makemakebuild.pl to produce a better Makefile. So you can easily add more tests. I also tried to be independent of the ant executable and the build.xml for gnu make friends, just because it is easier to add tests. but this doesn't work yet, so it's commented out. java on windows depends on backslashes in pathnames which is a mess in my eyes. I would really need a cygwin java.exe And the latest j2sdk1.4.0 doesn't read getenv('CLASSPATH') anymore. I also added the basic docs into this file. And a simple scheme to add your personal test url. -- Reini Urban http://xarch.tu-graz.ac.at/home/rurban/ |

You don't need to worry about that, I don't think. You just have to have the right sticky tags (in this case, none) set, so that your changes are checked into the right branch... I haven't put much effort into the tests since the initial import. I think as long as we are shipping developer versions (1.3 branch) the tests can stay included, since they don't use much space. For a stable release (1.2 or 1.4) they would be left out. The tests use a little system I wrote as a consultant for a small company here in NYC. It's httpunit (Java) and Ant (from the Jakarta project). In a sense it works like a browser and exercises a Web application as a user would. > > Yes, the testes inspired me yesterday to download the sun jre runtime, > but then I needed another 30mb download for the complete sdk just for > javac.exe > is there any more info how to run the tests or where to get the needed > classes, steve? > sun j2sdk1.4.0-beta3 Hmm. It's available from Sourceforge; just download the jar file and add it to your $CLASSPATH. Then install Ant, and you're all set. The tests don't work "out of the box" right now because I haven't figured out how to give the tests a URL that will work anywhere (certainly doable, like with 127.0.0.1 or a small config file the developer uses.. or even parsing the index.php). After that it's a simple matter of writing more little test scripts. I'll be able to make it test lots of things: login diff follow links edit a page and make sure the change is there and many more. Then I want to set up a cron job to run the tests against the alpha site every night after it's been installed, and send an email (I read something on sourceforge recently on how to do that as well) with the test results. I suggest using "." to denote subpages because of rawurlencode issues and USE_PATH_INFO problems with ":". rawurlencode only leaves - _ and . but escapes / and : so far I have: function getDefaultArguments() { // FIXME: how to exclude multiple pages? return array('prefix' => (USE_PATH_INFO) ? '[pagename].' : '[pagename]:', ... BTW: Should I commit the CalendarPlugin description to pgsrc? Or should just the plugin src point to http://phpwiki.sf.net/phpwiki/CalendarPlugin -- Reini Urban http://xarch.tu-graz.ac.at/home/rurban/ |

It didn't fail because of timeout for sure because I enhanced timeout form 30 to 240 per page :) It was still slow so I enhanced timeout. The fact is that my Apache-SSL server crashes twice per SetupWiki, after a $ mysql -e "delete from page" phpwiki each time I tested. On the same pages, loaded alphabetically. But my SSL server is more sensitive to crashes than without SSL. Strange. I only wanted to post that workaround for someone else to help himself out with renaming the HomePage to x so that it will restart until the SetupWiki() works. -- Reini Urban http://xarch.tu-graz.ac.at/home/rurban/ |

The html templates can go... except for the editpage template for the time being. For each language, the TextFormattingRules instructions need to be moved into a Summary paragraph at the top of the TextFormattingRules in pgsrc. The German files are done with the templates so they can go. (I didn't want to delete them myself because I was worried they might be removed from the 1.2 branch as well. Do I need to worry about this or does CVS handle them separately?) Once the translators are done with TFR the editpage templates can go. I suppose there's no reason to keep Browse and Message around, they can be deleted right away. Moving the BackLinks to the bottom with the other actions would be nice. I wanted to see some reorganization the ToolBar anyway. This change maintains user-interface consistency, i.e. the title now always navigates to the BackLinks page (except for pages based on the message template). To refer to the original page during editing, click the back button in the browser or open a seperate window.... I don't really like that change. I find it very useful to have a link back to the original page. And, why would you want to find backlinks from the edit page? I'll admit that the page-title => backlinks (but only sometimes) is confusing. There's been talk for awhile of putting in an explicit BackLinks button(or some such) to get away from this. |

I have just downloaded the new 1.3.2 package and seen in it a few unexpected "extras" :-) Would it be possible to clean up the cvs so that unneeded files are removed? That way, I won't have to keep ignoring them everytime I update my local copy (I am lazy like that!) 1) Everything in the admin directory - I remember Steve saying recently that these files had all been superceded 2) locale/xx/templates - All of these (I think) use the old template format anyway. Do they even work with the new wiki? In any case, I thought that we no longer needed different language versions of the templates since some very clever person had an ingenious idea to use gettext in the templates, and Jeff implemented it (:-)) Incidentally, might it be sensible to release language packs separately, rather than including them in the main distribution? Just a thought 3) Do we really need to distribute the tests directory? The only people who use it probably use cvs anyway. I for one have not the faintest idea what the tests are for! Lawrence |

Setting up the virgin wiki was a mess with the actual cvs. on windows/apache under heavy load it always timed out in between loading the pages, so that HomePage was loaded but the rest not. So I always came up with a half dbset. From time to time my apache also just died and reloaded (SSL?). The easiest solution was to rename the file pgsrc/HomePage to xHomePage, rename it back, and delete it from the wiki db. I tried several other more clever solutions but didn't succeed. such as increasing timeout. -- Reini Urban http://xarch.tu-graz.ac.at/home/rurban/ |
