Hi Robert, Hi Matt, apologize my intervention. From my point of view, when installing falloutRC1 (that was my 1st experience with pws1.0), webpages are not part of the core and have to setup by boost later (am I right?). WebPages has dependicies to MenuManager, why not?, and then its normal to boost MenuManager first and 2nd WebPages. Thats the way I did. After, everything looked well. I've been developing for fallout for a little while now, and overall it's very nice. I've already emailed Matt recently with some ideas about that. (subtle reminder to Matt) Tonight I spent some time playing with some of the "shipped" modules. Here are some of my findings: 1) I couldn't find a way to make other existing users a deity via user administration page. 2) When trying to deactivate a user, you will get a 404. 3) No "remember me" feature. ;-) 4) Use graphic authentication? What is that? I tried it and saw no difference. 5) "Want to join?" link appears when user signup is set to "not allowed". 6) Could we get an email from the site or a layout box when items need approved for a module? 7) "Edit blog" appears in mini-admin for non-deity, but when saving update, get permissions error. The user did not have "edit blog" permissions, but the blog was created by that user. 8) Local RSS feeds - how do I use them? Maybe something in the administration to enlighten me? External feeds work great however. 9) Web pages - "Force all pages to use this template" doesn't work. 10) Non-deity users with certain permissions can get permissions errors in web pages. The logic that checks whether links should be displayed apparently needs revisiting. 11) Disapprove on web pages approval page with deity user gets permission error. I better stop there for now. I don't want Matt to get mad at me. ;-) Fallout does have several great features I can't wait to put to use on public sites. So Matt, when are you going to convert phpwebsite.appstate.edu? Overall, great job Matt! Ideally, CIA would integrate with something like Launchpad. I've advocated SF.net start looking at these features for inclusion in future software updates. https://launchpad.net/ In the mean time, I'm trying to integrate phpwebsite-comm into phpwebsite as a true subproject. Note: Other tasks have slowed my progress on this task. :-( > Another option is something like http://planet.maemo.org/ or > planet.phpWebSite. Wendall's phpwsrssfeeds module can aggregate multiple feeds. I'm not sure if it achieves planet like functionality yet, but that's what I requested. The menu module is included in the tarball. It should be in your boost list. It sounds as if you are having other problems. Please make sure your php.ini allows error messages to display. Hi all Just tried to install rc-1, all seemed fine then I found myself with a blank home page. When I went into boost I found that the web page module had missing dependenices. Menu manger was not installed where do I find it or is it a missing part of the download. Thanks Robert |

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 This caught my eye. One of the problems with phpWebSite in my estimation is that information on modules, themes, and the core application are spread all over the place. Perhaps something like CIA could be used to aggregate third party changes and the main phpWebSite cvs commits. Now that works for some of the larger module/theme projects that have CVS scripts implemented. However, smaller projects may not be able to integrate into something like CIA since they may or may not be using CVS/SVN. https://cia.navi.cx/ https://cia.navi.cx/doc https://cia.navi.cx/doc/adding-projects https://cia.navi.cx/stats/project/BZFlag https://cia.navi.cx/stats/author/davidtrowbridge Another option is something like http://planet.maemo.org/ or planet.phpWebSite. In the case of CIA, it doesn't matter where the site is located. The goal of CIA is to track multiple projects to see what's going on in general in all areas of the Open Source world. The goal of a planet.phpWebSite is to aggregate multiple community feeds in one location. There in lies another problem that I see with the phpWebSite community. Where would something like a planet.phpWebSite be hosted? Depending on how a system like this works, there may not be enough web site/database space available to host planet.phpWebSite on sourceforge. The college site looks like a good place to host something like this but, then there may be legal or political reasons that a plaent.phpWebSite cannot be hosted at phpwebsite.appstate.edu. So how would the community do something like this? Ok so some individual says they'll create the site. The community will come to rely on the information and then one day poof the site is gone. For example, some phpWebSite hall of famers are now either just a parking domain out in the big Internet spewing add links, or the former useful phpWebSite related info is under a construction banner. http://www.phpgirl.net/ http://www.phpgirl.org/ http://www.shirka.org/ Let's play where's Mike Winzor while we are at it too. ;-) So how could the community do something like this so that it lives on past the initial curator? Hi Matt I have started working with it found my problem for some reason it keep droping the default.css so added it to style.ini. have a look I am working on making the muggle them for fallout. I am just learning php and css style of web display. You may look at http://www.wolfclanwebsolutions.com/hosting/ this is my try at it. Been busy so not to far along. And did get the blue to work. One other thing if you can help is, when I create a user they do not see anything but the left menu when loged in. Thanks Robert Matthew McNaney wrote: > Hi Silverwolfe, > > I changed the default.css body background color to: > > background-color : #000666; > > And didn't have any problem getting a dark blue background. > > You change anything else? > > Matt > > > On Thu, 2006-05-11 at 20:34 -0500, Robert wrote: > >> Hi >> I have installed the fallout on my server. Thanks, but I was referring to the help file that is included in the download, which installs into www.base_url/manual/html/ Thanks for support. It's working really well (except for HTML editor) - can't wait for next version. Hi Silverwolfe, I changed the default.css body background color to: background-color : #000666; And didn't have any problem getting a dark blue background. You change anything else? Hi I have installed the fallout on my server. I joined this list is hopes of learning a thing or two about the theme engine and making themes. The reason is I tried a baby step by changing just the background color and when it was applied it hole theme went away, what I mean by that there was no color displayed only text and layout. This made me think that some things had really changed. Code from default body { color: #000; background-color : #000666; } Change body { color: #000; background-color : #000666; } So now what did I do wrong. I have also notice some things that don't quit work. Yes I know it is beta that is not the point, the point is, is the error known. If I am in error posting this here please let me know. Thanks Silverwolfe |

Good morning, This letter is in response to Eloi's and Shaun's emails to the developer list. You should read each of them to catch up on the conversion. As I said yesterday, I am not gungho on rewriting key. Many processes are balanced against its current functionality. That said, I am also not willing to make a blunder that could damage the speed of the program in the long run. So we can discuss the issue further after this letter. I will discussing my findings in this email. Contradictory statements should not mistaken for stubbornness. If the community feels table separation is needed, so be it. Originally, I thought of using separate tables, but I figured since I could target only the primary key of the Key table, access speed should not be an issue. More on this below. DO NOT join the conversation without knowing what Key is and how it works. Install Fallout, install modules, kick it around and, most importantly, read docs/Key.txt first. One last thing, this letter will be LONG. Ok. I started by greping all the usage of the phpws_key table. Here are the files that access that table directly (not including the conversion files). When I write about 'cross-referencing', I am refering to the following example: SELECT * FROM phpws_key, some_module WHERE phpws_key.id=some_module.key_id; core/class/Key.php Well duh. There are actually three tables to Key. The other two are phpws_key_edit and phpws_key_view. They contain the edit and view permissions respectively. Queries will cross-reference the key_id columns in each table when trying to decide whether the particular key should be included in a list. A Multi-row result from the phpws_key table, queries the id, restricted, and active columns. Module column should not be referenced (it currently is in some cases but read more about that below). For view and edit restrictions, we will query cross-indexes in the forementioned tables. mod/boost/class/Boost.php It does search on the table's module column, but it only does so when a module is uninstalled. We can live with that. mod/categories/class/Action.php When listing categorized keys, the pager will cross-index against its category item table. Now there IS a call against the module column sometimes - which is bad. This can be fixed however by storing the module in with the category_item. In other words instead of: SELECT * FROM phpws_key, category_items WHERE phpws_key.id=category_items.key_id AND phpws_key.module = 'some_module'; We use: SELECT * FROM phpws_key, category_items WHERE phpws_key.id=category_items.key_id AND category_items.module = 'some_module'; This would allow matching only where is was needed and not on the whole key table. mod/categories/class/Categories.php Same deal as above. Need to move module match to the category_items table. mod/rss/class/Channel.php Oh ya.... I wrote an RSS module. This pulls the last 15 keys. I haven't really worked on this module in a while. Need to go over it with Wendall at some point. mod/search/class/User.php Search would need the same change as categories - create a module column in the search table. The search process probably requires a separate discussion outside of the key_id issue. mod/users/class/Permission.php Users loads key id's and it searches against the module column. However, this is only done once per module and then the permissions are saved in the User session. mod/webpage/class/Admin.php When pages are deactivated, Web Page updates the active column on all the keys. A rare occurrence so it can be disregarded. Those are all the files. Now back to Eloi's letter: > It's only faster for... (queries on the key's primary index) > where the records involved have different module names (but you can't > search on that). If they're all from the same module, all efficiency > is lost because of the unnecessarily large index. Of the queries to phpws_key, two query on the module column and only in certain instances: categories and search. If we split the key table into different modules, then we would need to add the module column for both (so we could know which table to pull the key id from). We would then search on the primary key in each separate module key table. If we are going to add the module column to those tables anyway and we are still performing searches against the single phpws_key table using only the primary index, isn't that the same thing? See the cool thing (to me anyway) about the key table is that other modules don't have to know where the key came from. If we break it into module specific tables, purpose of the key becomes kind of irrelevant. Instead of just storing a single id for information on another module, I have to keep track of which module it came from. At that point, why even have the key? We revert back to having to know DETAILS about the module item. Every module has a single language to referring to every other content element and it is a single number. That's nice. One last thing. Not EVERY item has a key. You only key content items that have a reason to be bound to something else. For example, Web Page 'volumes' are keyed. The individual pages in a volume are not. Blogs entries are keyed as are the comment threads. The individual comments are not. Which brings me to Shaun's email: > Most modules won't be a problem but there's one specific module which > needs all the help it can get and that's ANY forum module. > Potentially you've got millions of posts in a forum. Inefficient > queries and searches can bring a site to it's knees. Keeping the > queries as efficient as possible and using the indexes is very > important. The current search module is written for keyed elements. Since comments aren't (and shouldn't) be keyed, they fall outside Search's capabilities. What we need to discuss is the ability of Search module "plug-ins". I will start thinking of a format for comments as an example. > While I'm on searches. If you're re-doing searching, a time limited > search would be useful so that, by default at least, a user isn't > searching every single item ever published on a site. Very good point. I will add this to the search module. Ok on to other topics. > But, users should never be deleted, just made inactive. Quite true and I should have thought of that. I will recode it. > That sounds great! "creator" and "updater" could remain as cached > data as long as the Coding Practices indicate that ownership & > permissions checks must always be made against "creator_id", as the > username held in "creator" may be incorrect, obsolete or a duplicate. I will put the id's in as well. Something I learned from Eloi's letter was that I need to pay more attention to optimization. I read some SQL hints this morning and it is clear I need to create more indexes and watch my query syntax. I will end this here. Thank you for the feedback on Key. Please respond to the above if you get a chance. -- Matthew McNaney Electronic Student Services Appalachian State University http://phpwebsite.appstate.edu |

Most modules won't be a problem but there's one specific module which needs all the help it can get and that's ANY forum module. Potentially you've got millions of posts in a forum. Inefficient queries and searches can bring a site to it's knees. Keeping the queries as efficient as possible and using the indexes is very important. While I'm on searches. If you're re-doing searching, a time limited search would be useful so that, by default at least, a user isn't searching every single item ever published on a site. I found that on a site with 3-4 years of cruft, and a few hundred thousand forum posts, just setting the default for a search to 'the last 30 days' instead of 'since the dawn of time' resulted in a load less resources being used. A little bit of social engineering goes a long way to make up for cheap-ass servers (not that I have any of those now) or bad code.
