Hello, I am new to PHP/Linux/MySQL but here are the solutions to some not so straight forward RedHat 8 (maybe even 9) problems: 1. how do I create a database? on the shell type: mysqladmin create videopro then: mysql then: grant all on videopro.* to video@localhost identified by "password"; make sure you typed the ; at the end then type: quit then type: mysqladmin reload 2. the PHP files do not get read? Well it seems like RedHats PHP.ini file has some stuff different than a standard install. Edit as root /etc/php.ini and change register_globals to OFF and also short_open_tag to ON restart apache with /etc/init.d/httpd restart Hope this helps someone not spend the hours it took me to climb the steep learning curve ;-) ---- 6:59pm up 3:42, RedHat Linux 8.0, kernel 2.4.20-18.8 on an AMD Duron 850, using KDE 3.1 ---- Q: What is purple and commutes? A: A boolean grape. |

Hi Translation team, to ease your work, I set up a front-end for editing the translations. Please visit the developer's demo on http://www.qumran.org/homes/izzy/software/pvp-dev/ and log in as admin (password is pvptrans), and go to the Admin menu. The you'll find a new entry to edit translations. Then, just follow the steps described in the online help for these forms - this might be a more convenient way than to edit the SQL files directly :-) If you have trouble (e.g. because you use a non-standard character set) let me know, so I can help you out. Same applies to any occuring errors ;) Best regards, Izzy. P.S.: make sure to have cookies activated when using this way - otherwise you may tread on so.'s toes :-) -- Itzchak Rehberg http://www.qumran.org/homes/izzy/ http://www.izzysoft.de/ "We have joy, we have fun, we boot Linux on our SUN..." |

Hi to all long-time translators, Again I just want to ask you to update your translations, if time permits. As it looks like, all language files but Spanish, German and English urgently need to be updated with the new phrases - spoken from the size, these languages cover only about 50% of the terms used right now. I would be glad to be able to include more up-to-date language files with the next Gamma release scheduled for about May/June 2003, and would appreciate your help here. Thank you all for your contribution (plus in advance for the future contribution ;) All the best, Izzy. P.S.: sorry if this mail arrives twice - had some problems sending the first copy ;) -- Itzchak Rehberg http://www.qumran.org/homes/izzy/ http://www.izzysoft.de/ "We have joy, we have fun, we boot Linux on our SUN..." |

Hi friends, it's already some months ago that I read the last time from you. And I must admit, for about 8 month I did almost no work on the program. But within the last few weeks, there have already been 3 updates (recent version is 0.2.4), and the next release (v0.2.5) is coming soon. A couple of features are added since, and together with those there were phrases and help files added to the language relevant parts. I don't know if you are still using the program (if you ever did ;) - but I would be happy if you could bring the files for your provided language to an up-to-date state. If you can't do this, please let me know as well, so I will start a new query on sourceforge (and somebody else can take over). I hope to bring out a new gamma release (v0.3.0) within the next few weeks/months, so it would be nice to have all the phrases up-to-date. However, you may wish to take a look at the latest development and capabilities of phpVideoPro - so here's the url to the demo site (in case you forgot): http://www.qumran.org/homes/izzy/ Thank you in advance </izzy> -- Itzchak Rehberg mailto:iz...@qu... http://www.qumran.org/ "We have joy, we have fun, we boot Linux on our SUN..." |

Guess I won't do the labels in PS but using the PHP graphics engine instead. I'm not 100% sure yet, but for now it looks like that. This will need a new option for wether to use TTF or PS Fonts (depending on the system and its support). Does anybody know some typical fonts available on most systems? E.g. "Arial", "Helvetica" and "Times New Roman" ship with every Windoze version - but not any more with Linux (copyright problems). Of course we could "force" the user to import those fonts - but I'ld feel better to give them a choice... > cdlabelgen already does some of the adjustment very well, e.g. > shrinking text to fit it into the hardwired width. I know, and I already had a look at it. A bit easier to understand is dvlabelgen (for digital video tapes - these small thingies for camcorders). My other project, phpCDLabelPS, was inspired by that. And there are also ideas for adjustment - but all based on PostScript. I just browsed the functions available in PHP concerning fonts and graphics, and I guess these will be the better choice. I wanna stick to the template idea - and with the graphics engine, every user can design his/her own "Label Template(s)" with his/her favorite graphics editor and just plug them in. Would be a bit more difficult with PostScript I guess. > Is PHP able to create Postscript code? Guess the project name PHPcdlabelPS answers this question :-) PostScript code is plain ascii, so you can generate it easily. You just have to know how it works - it's a programming language of its own (so, theoretically, you could also write C++ code with PHP :) > If yes, cdlabelgen can be ported to PHP. see above - theoretically it could. For my CDs, I prefer my own program since it reads the CD content and prints it on the cover back as well (a very useful feature for MP3 CDs ;) And for the labels, I guess the graphics solution suits better. I just think of things like adding a Dolby Logo - much easier if everything is done in graphics. Maybe it's as easy in PostScript as well - if one's used to it :-) But unfortunately, I can just be proud to have understand its basics... </izzy> -- Itzchak Rehberg http://www.qumran.org/homes/izzy/ "We have joy, we have fun, we boot Linux on our SUN..." |

First: Sorry for my absence for such a long time... Second: if anybody is still using our little app, please update from CVS and check the VCD support I just added. Was just a little thing, and I don't thing it messed up anything - but the better proof is much testing. Here everything seems to work fine. If it stays such, I would like to make a release again before starting with more work on it - I hope to do the label stuff within the next days (with some luck), but if I can't finnish it, there won't be a release before I did cause the code may be a bit mixed up then :) So, any reports/hints are welcome! </izzy> -- Itzchak Rehberg mailto:iz...@qu... http://www.qumran.org/ "We have joy, we have fun, we boot Linux on our SUN..." |

Hi, because of a local Linux distro update (RHL 6.2 to 7.2) and therefore a DB change from PG 6.5 to 7.1 I had to migrate the data from old DB to new. Looks like pg_dump'ed data in 6.5 cannot be restored in 7.1 therefore I wrote 2 small Perl programs. "dump_universal_phpVideoPro.pl" dumps a phpVideoPro DB in a "xml" like scheme, currently only supported PG 6.5 "restore_universal_phpVideoPro.pl" restores the phpVideoPro DB from "xml" like dump, currently only supported/tested PG 7.1. Known bugs: the sequence ids must be set using "psql", the update via the Perl program doesn't work (don't know why). To Izzy: perhaps you add something like such "export/import from/to universal format" so people can run backups and DB type moving (PG<->MySQL,...) , too. Hope this helps, Peter |

Also such selections can be useful for next steps like printing lists, labels. >> next low prio suggestions: >> checkbox for RVTs named "verified". >> Meaning: if a movie is recorded on tape, it has normally the status >> "not verified". I thought about that as well... > Suggestion for database: > 1 text field containing international country codes, separated by > spaces, commas or ... Better database suggestion: instead of country codes, using the field language.id as reference (we already have countries/languages listed up in the table languages). The comma-separated list will make good sense here, since it would even allow requests like "SELECT ... WHERE language_id LIKE '%,25,%'" to find out the movies with this language. But do you have any ideas for the design of the frontend in edit/view mode to select/display those languages? It must allow selection of multiple languages in edit mode, and must list up multiple languages in view mode - while at the same time it has to always fit into the template, regardless how many languages are chosen. Same thing for subtitles, same thing for subtitles for the hearing impaired. And the form shall still be clear (and not confusing). Another thing is: for DVDs, there cannot only be multiple languages - but some of them can be in one tone format and others in a different (e.g. English in DD 5.1, German in Dolby Surround). If we want to take this into account as well, it gets really hard... </izzy> |

Hi Peter, before I go into details: I feel it a good idea to have as many fields in the edit form *as needed*, but as less *as possible*. Otherwise there are too many of them to fill in - and I don't like clicking around with the mouse just to reach the next field, neither to hit the tab five times and then being one field too far :) Peter Bieringer wrote: > next low prio suggestions: > checkbox for RVTs named "verified". > Meaning: if a movie is recorded on tape, it has normally the status > "not verified". Suggestion: one of your last requests was a 3-state-field for commercials (yes/no/cut off), which I built up as 4-state (unknown/yes/no/cut off). Why not leaving this field in a state "unknown" (meaning "not verified") until you verified it? Since after verification, "unknown" makes no sense (then you know wether you have commercials in or not)? Couldn't this be a satisfying solution? </izzy> |

Hi, next low prio suggestions: checkbox for RVTs named "verified". Meaning: if a movie is recorded on tape, it has normally the status "not verified". After review the tape, status san be changed to "verified". I've implemented such checkbox in my old video database, which is now on the way to migrate to phpVideoPro. Peter |
